A hideous sight to see on a laptop deal.

    • +4

Being a bit melodramatic aren't we?
Its an OK specked i3 lappy for $400. Cheapest next price after eBay is $529 at CPL http://cplonline.com.au/hp-pavilion-notebook-15-p222tu-l1m30…
May not suit you but could easily meet the needs of others.

      • +2

Yeah hideous was the wrong choice there. It is a bit disappointing though. The rest of the specs seem to make up for it.

        • +1

So what do you recommend for the same price then ?

        • +5

With applications and websites starting to be designed around FHD, it's getting pretty bad.

        • +1

          @redcreek200: Cube i7?

  • It's (still) normal resolution for most of laptop, but for me after owning laptop with this resolution for many many years, I will only upgrade my laptop to one with fhd.

    • what problems have you had running this res?

  • No IPS panel? I wouldn't mind paying extra $$$ for it, yet it is difficult to find one

  • As above ^ I've been watching hoping some better specced models come for around $1000 (from $1700-1899) with FHD/QHD (and touch would be a bonus) as well as i7-Quad core and hybrid drive (cheapest I've seen is around $1190 from Dell Outlet). Thinking I might be dreaming however these $400-500 deals are good for budget bargain hunters. Be wary about refurbs though, you are always running a risk of getting a faulty machine.

    • +1

      I have got this and I think this is not a bag deal. Basically, it is i7 quad + hfd screen + 8gb ddr4 + 4gb ddr5 960m + blueray combo + 128gb ssd + 1tb hdd.

      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360952922310?_trksid=p2057872.m27…

It is $1440, not $1000. But I think with that powerful gpu, ssd and blueray, it is ok for this price.

      • How do you find it with the heat,? My sister has a piece of crap HP with an i7 processor and AMD GPU (i can't remember the model) but hers overheats really quickly and shuts itself down. We have had to send it back for warranty repairs twice, once that the HDD failed and another for the motherboard.

I am keen in getting a laptop for portable gaming but am worried that i might have the same issue as her

        • I have not received my laptop yet and it is still on its way. I will test it once I have got it. However, I do have google it before I pull the trigger. In the online review, thanks to the new skylake CPU, the laptop is doing well. They did not measure the internal CPU and GPU temperature, but the temperature near to the vent is about 42 degree on full load. Although we cannot 100% believe the review, but I think it should be fine.

By the way, I do have a HP laptop before and I have the same heating problem as well. The lesson I have learnt is: "DO NOT touch HP unless it is a high end business laptop with business class warranty".

        • That really shouldn't happen regardless of how poorly built it is, since cpu's/gpu now days will throttle itself down way before that happens. My guess is that your sister covered up the vents by placing the laptop on the bed or something.

        • i7 CPUs all run hot. I have an i7-4710HQ with an AMD R7 265x and it gets hot quickly. I bought myself an aluminium notebook cooler with usb 3.0 ports (so it is both a hub and cooler) to put underneath and it seems to help a bit. My cooler hasn't got fans but there are plenty out there with fans.

  • Hi all

My last laptop purchase was an acer from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/129596

I've found the laptop useful but frustrating at times as if I have a few browser pages open or try to do some other task it'll freeze or run really slow.

I don't want to spend much on a laptop as I go weeks without firing it up (normally a tablet is all I need), but occasionally need one for typing up an assignment or doing something beyond the scope of a tablet.

The only other thing I want it for is to connect to a tv or projector and stream online videos. Not sure why but the current laptop makes things appear blocks or laggy to process.

Do you think this product would be a decent enough upgrade or am I better off sticking with what I've got given my limited use? I'm not much of a tech expert so appreciate your thoughts.

    • +3

I'm not a tech expert as well, but this laptop has a newer i3 processor, and 4GB of ram, so it's a considerable upgrade from your old laptop, which is really outdated.

There are much better and expensive laptops in the market, but because it seems like you are a light user, this should be more than enough to handle what you need.

    • +2

There's nothing wrong with your existing laptop for general use as long as you upgrade the RAM. Upgrade to windows 10 and you'll be good for another few years.

The blocks/lag when streaming videos most likely have nothing to do with your laptop and are due to a slow network connection.

    • +2

I would recommend you upgrading the ram to 4gb

      Here's a video

      http://youtu.be/YLQR1p1l9cU

      • Thanks all. Anyone recommend a place to buy ram (or how much to spend) and what type of ram to get? Just don't want to order the wrong product!

        • +2

As a first step you should go to www.crucial.com and see what it recommends (not to buy, just to know what RAM you need)

There are basically 3 things you need to know about your RAM
          1. What shape it is
          2. How big it is
          3. How fast it is

          1. is always SODIMM because you have a laptop. (Normal RAM is DIMM)

          2. is up to you, your current laptop has 2GB so if you add 4GB it should be ok, but you might want to go to 8GB. Check how many slots your laptop has. It probably has 2 slots, only once being used right now. If so, you can probably buy a 4GB and put it in the 2nd slot, then you'll have 6GB total.

          3. It's very important that you choose RAM that runs at the speed your computer can support. If you get slower RAM you'll notice it's running worse, if you get faster RAM you'll just be wasting money (it'll still run at the slower speed). This is where the Crucial website can help. Otherwise, you need to look up the manufacturer specs for your laptop's motherboard. An example of a speed is "DDR3-1600". Confusingly, this means the same thing as "DDR3 PC3-12800". Don't get the two numbers mixed up.

If you know all 3 of these things you can hunt around Ebay or anywhere else for a bargain.

    • A regular format that can have rejuvenating properties on laptops if they get sluggish due to bloat, and random crap running in the background. (This can be relatively quick and easy with some google-fu)

A free alternative and a potential upgrade would be to install say Ubuntu on it. I've found slow and crappy laptops seem revitalized after doing so. It's slightly harder, but is as simple as following a guide to make a CD/usb, then clicking next, next etc..

  • Hard Drive: 500 GB 5400 rpm SATA

this drags the WHOLE laptop windows performance down and no Core I3 or I7 is going to fix it, trust me on this and spend the extra on whatever SSD size you can afford.

Chinese manufacturers need to beef up their game this year with at least 128gb flash memory to start killing off all these old timers.

  • So if i travel overseas next month, can i get the GST back for this eBay purchase?
    10% of the $408 or $510?

    • $510 , the invoice with show the full amount :)

  • I also haven't decided it if i want a

    $510 ($408) i3-5010U + 4GB Ram
    or
    $439 ($351) Celeron N2840 + 8GB Ram

    advice please!

    • buy this one, and upgrade hard disk to SSD.

    • This one for sure. The N2840 is painfully slow in comparison, and you can upgrade the RAM in this one to 8G for <$30.

  • thanks. bought one. good deal!

  • Bought one :)

At last minute i changed my mind to this laptop as i saw some of the comments here. I was about to pay in checkout for another one and it's $100 cheaper than this one, after discount code $303.20 (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-250-G4-Intel-Celeron-Laptop-PC…)

    • The n3050 is ridiculously slow though. Benchmark

      • I know the 5010U is faster, BUT that much faster, i didn't really notice!

I have actually done a bit of research on N3050, since i am not a gamer or using any CPU high intensive softwares or tasks after watching this particular review on the N3050 i thought well it's ok for Ozbargains, HD Youtube videos or movies only the CPU usage will be quite high.
        http://laptoping.com/cpus/product/intel-celeron-n3050/

Extra $100 for the CPU upgrade, maybe it's worth it..

      • …and I thought the N3050 is newer therefore faster than at least the N2840. How wrong was I.

  • Bit the bullet on this one. I'm an occasional user and mainly for word processing and surfing the web. I also had a spare 4gb DDR3 and recently bought an SSD to try and save my old lappy which died in the butt. Don't really know how but hoping to put Win10 on the SSD from the original HDD. Thanks OP! Last day of CVALENTINE20 pushed me over. Was kinda hoping for an i5 with a better screen for about $500.

    • Hmm just realised it doesn't say what the OS is. Hope it's Windows 10.

      • Ordered on Monday arrived today and I'm not in a metro area. Windows 8.1 automatically upgraded to 10 for free. Now to try to stick in RAM and SSD. Surprised it's white didn't check but not really fussed.

        • How did it go? Have you added the RAM and used the SSD?

Which RAM did you use? Does the laptop have 2 RAM slots?

How hard was it replacing the HDD with SSD? I am thinking of doing this as well if it's easy. Also, is it possible to have SSD and HDD?

        • @Devilius: Haha great questions. I was going to post a comment on how I went but thought it would look sad posting 4 comments in a row and no one reading.

I have added both. It was a bit of a pain in the butt for several reasons. But definitely so much faster. But also needed to do a clean install so that helps too.

YouTube helped with opening the cover:How to disassemble Any HP Pavilion 15 P series no…: https://youtu.be/UCCCXxWe4Mo

2 slots for RAM but they are under the MB so you have to unscrew that. You could probably pull the whole MB out but I was sick of dissembling things so I managed to squeeze my fingers under and click it in.

The guy in the above video has a custom bay where the dvd drive goes so you can have 2 hdds.

I had this RAM from a previous laptop upgrade attempt: http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Patriot+SO-… (think the 1600 $29 one).

It was a hassle for me because I had stuff on the ssd and was hoping to load a new copy of win 10 over an insider version I was running on my old laptop but it wouldn't let me, not even to format it (something about mbr and gpt) so had to take the files I wanted off it and format then reinstall. At least no more bloatware. A new ssd would've been easier.

          Hope that helps :)

        • [@Juice08]: Thank you. I was waiting for an update from you. Hahaha…

I watched the video and it looks complicated just to upgrade the RAM! In the past, I remember laptop usually has a lid at the back that you can open just to add RAM. It sure has changed!

In the video looks like he is using a SSD and HDD. With this laptop, do you know if it has the space for both SSD and HDD? Does it has the bay to connect both at the same time?

Also, you mentioned a clean install. If I were to keep using the HDD, would you recommend me to reinstall windows and everything first before using it?

Last question, how did you reinstall windows? I know that it has pre installed windows 8.1. But, if I want to reformat and reinstall windows, where would I get the installer from? The windows key, etc? Same with all the drivers. I can't find any disc or usb stick in the box!

          Thank you again.

        • @Devilius: I believe you would need to buy something to put the second hdd where the dvd drive goes. I actually didn't know the dvd drive was easy to remove. I almost broke it trying to yank the tray out whilst open.

Microsoft has a program for you to create a recovery disc or usb based on your computer. You don't have to put a key in. I just copied it from the control panel 'system' in case.

I upgraded to windows 10 and used this:https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10ISO
I'm pretty sure you can also create a recovery disc from Windows 8 and older.

        • @Juice08: Thank you!
