$1K Custom Build Help?

Hey OzB,

I plan on building a personal/gaming computer. I'd rather the cost not exceed $1K.
Could someone help me pick the parts, this is what I have so far.

SSD: 250GB SAMSUNG EVO $115
HDD: Salvaged
CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor $280 MSY
RAM: 2 x 4GB GSKILL - $65
ODD:
Mobo:
GPU:
Case:
PSU:

I hear the Radeon R9 380 is good.. Thanks!

  • I'd call up the stores you're planning to buy from first before you pick your parts, MSY's stock checker is pretty inaccurate. Both NVIDIA and AMD are releasing their next series in 6 months, so I'd hold off on buying til then. Right now however, the 380 and GTX 960 fall in your price range. The 380 is a tiny bit better (but also a bit more power hungry), but overall the difference falls down to your brand preference. Also, PCPartsPicker, Ozbargain use markdown, so you can use the reddit function to paste your build here.

    CPU: i5-6400 $271, MSY
Mobo: Asrock H110M-HDV - $89. The alternatives are like $1-5 dollars apart, so take your pick. Its down to brand loyalty really. MSY
RAM: G Skill Ripjaw 8GB kit: $71. There is a patriot set for $65, but you might like the fancy edgy heatsink. Again, brand loyalty. MSY
ODD: Not needed. Install Windows through a USB.
    GPU: R9 380 - 265, or GTX 960 (259 for MiniITX version, 275 for full sized)

That leaves ~190 for the case and PSU. Min req for the 380 is 550W, so a 750W PSU should suffice

    • Any reason why you went i5 6400 as opposed to 4460?
      Thanks.

      • A bit cheaper with about the same performance, but newer architecture and lower power consumption. Also the 6400 can be OC (BIOS update coming soon is disabling it, so watch out) to above the 4460. In the worse case, the 6500 is $294 and is slightly faster than both at stock clock

      • Actually, now with that PCBytes deal, I'd just get that, buy the upgraded PSU + (Case if you want to) for $130, and add your own graphic card.

  • What are you intending to use it for? Video editing, gaming, office tasks, server duties, photo editing…etc. all have different requirements and would require a different allocation of budget. For example, if you were looking for a machine to edit videos, you wouldn't need as powerful of a GPU, but rather, more CPU and RAM. For photo editing, having a colour accurate monitor is the most important thing, so on.

    • personal/gaming computer

      • So essentially only gaming? What else is it going to be used for? What are the preferences in regards to silence vs. performance…etc.

        • I'm not the OP

        • Personal Computer / Gaming.

It'll be my main computer, I don't plan on overlocking and I'd prefer it to be silent yes, provided I'm not sacrificing too much performance..

  • 1k budget
people recommending to wait and get Pascal GPUs

    lol

    • This is what I've got. Thoughts?

      • H97 is unnecessary, unless you really need the extra 2 USB ports. Same for the optical drive, unless you need it to watch old DVD or something. Games are distributed digitally, and Windows can be installed from a USB stick. R9 390 is like ~$500 on its own.

        • Yea, you're probably right cheers.
