Need a Budget Car under $15k

Hello OzB,

I am on a lookout for a second car. suggest me something good under 15k.

this will be for wife.
ease to drive around - need auto and 5 doors
easy on maintenance - want to avoid 6 months service
cheap service
good resale.
preferably 2014 upwards models. but not a constraint.
under 30k - 40k kms.

I loved the corolla hatch, but is little over budget.

    2014 Kia Cerato

dont see any elantra under 15k. Am I searching right?

  • If you're considering brand new, i20 Active is not a bad choice. 12 month service, though a little under powered. Consumption is great though.

Add-on: You can easily get it for around $14k after a bit of haggling and/or try getting the first year service for free. Reason why they're going cheap is because they won't be bringing in i20's and will have it replaced by Accents from 2016. However, the 5-year warranty and lifetime service cap will be still be applicable.

The issue you face is that by your definition, a good resale, will mean that the car you want to buy will be higher priced. Like you point out the Corolla is a little over budget because it has a good resale value.

If you are keeping a car for say 10 years then resale value isnt as big an issue.

  • Get a toyota camry/carolla from a place that auction government/lease cars.

    • Agreed, and don't be put off buying interstate. Their online reviews are pretty much spot on and freight is around $500 from any capital city (for SA anyway).

  • Mazda 3
    Toyota Corrola
    Hyundai i30

And stay away from European cars :)

    • lol non of your suggestion is <15k for 2014 model.

  • "preferably 2014 upwards models. but not a constraint"

lol good luck. You'll be able to get a 2014 model for that price, but it'll coome with the power of a Mr. Bean car.

I do not need something that goes 0 to 100 in 5 or 6 seconds. But need something that can ferry kids around the house.

Around the house? How big is your house?

        • u know what i meant, if fun intended then the house has a radius of 15+ kms :)

Bought it from Brian Hilton Toyota Central Coast NSW.
Car was purchased from them in 2013, got it in december last year.

They traded it back to the place they bought it two years later.

Was listed for 15.5 i said 15k and they offered to fill the tank if i was to purchase it on the spot.

        Had 55k km's on it

Was the cheapest Sedan i could find, they were 17k on eBay + Gumtree.

  • I'm selling a 2013 Nissan Pulsar sedan 40Kms shortly.

  • Hello OP,
    Thanks for posting this.
I am currently in the market with similar requirements.
budget is more like 12k and looking at Mazda 2 neo, hyundai Accent(1.6l ones) - year 2012 onwards(all auto).
Must be 5 star ancap. There are quite a few of those in victoria as well.
    regards,
    jignesh

  • The major thing you are missing is the size of the car. With those requirements you will have to look for a small car.

Good recommendations above but I will also add the Kia Rio. Mostly because the service period is 15,000 Km where most of the others are 10K.

    • Yup going to test drive the kia rio s on the weekend.
Some really good colour options there with Kia.

      • u in melbourne Jignesh bhai?

        • Yup in Melbroune.

  • Purchased a 2012 Honda Jazz for $12500 has 16k on clock, like new, rear seats go flat so can carry so much. brilliant little car for town use.
