QANTAS has promised to offer “fast, free in-flight wi-fi”, as it announces another impressive profit result.

The airline says customers can look forward to internet speeds 10 times faster than conventional on-board wi-fi as part of a partnership with global broadband services provider ViaSat that will tap into the National Broadband Network.

Trials will begin with a single Qantas Boeing 737 aeroplane in late 2016, retrofitted with equipment to enable high-speed wi-fi.

A full roll-out across Qantas Domestic’s fleet of A330s and B737s is planned from early 2017, with the aircraft to be fitted with modems and the advanced antenna that receives the satellite signal.

I use virgin wifi for free

a deal/bargain should mention something like QANTAS: Vancouver Return Dep Melb $1133, Bris $1142, Sydney $1143, Perth $1222, Adel $1229, Hob $1324 (With Free Inflight Wi-Fi)

more specific rather than what looks like a news update.

Yes other airlines may charge for inflight wifi but what if quantas decides to increase their flight prices during the trial period? The deal needs to be more specific =)

  • internet speeds 10 times faster than conventional on-board wi-fi

    nice…

    • It taps in the NBN.. Are you saying this doesn't access the Internet?>

Good one Roary! you've helped people wake up and produce 17 lines of pretty useless but self gratifying comment! (including me, LoL)

    • Really? and how does your comment add to this discussion?
Oh learn to count, its 6 lines..

so if we can get wifi inside planes, means we dont have to turn off all electronic devices during flights anymore?

    • Now days they only request you turn off during take off and landing.
Flight mode disable cellular functions (calls, SMS) but does not disable wifi

      • i dont believe using blutooth etc etc can harm the flight? im sure someone have "forgot" to turn off mobile phone while flying and nothing happen>?

          and nothing happen>?

          MH370……….

@jv: If only that flight had free Wi-Fi someone would have checked into facebook "About to crash land on Indian ocean" or "Being abducted by Aliens"

        • maybe not, but is it really worth the risk?!

        • @taoz: but what are the risk? Never have news about it? Any proof?

        • @taoz: I am sure the signals from the cellular towers around the airport are much stronger than the signals from our mobile phone. If they don't do any harm how can the signals from a mobile phone does?

Does anyone actually do that anymore?

    • In my last flight with a different company, the airline that I was with had a rule where they allow you to use your electronics (in flight mode) even during take off and landing (given that they can fit inside the pouch in front of the seat).

    • In Australia you've been able to use electronics (in flight mode) during takeoff and landing for about 2 or 3 years now, and you've been able to use it outside of takeoff and landing for quite a few years prior to that.

      • Whenever i have flow and been using my phone in flight mode i have always been told to turn it off.
Even after i tell them dont worry its in flightmode they dont leave till i say ok ill turn it off then, simply press the power button and put it in standby mode in my pocket.

        • You're not flying with Chinese airlines are you? Chinese regulations still ban all use of mobile phones.

  • Hopefully its implemented and tested correctly. Air Crash Investigations - Fire on Board (Swiss Air 111)

Seriously though, just use 4G. Works fine unless you are over the middle of the desert.

    • So you're telling me that I lose reception on a train but 4g works fine on a plane? Time to test this out next time I fly.

      • As long as you are over population its fine

    • More like… why can't i even have WIFI on the train to/from central coast, let alone mobile reception.

  • is it unmetered?
What if i connect my laptop and use file sharing?

Why would you …. It's going to be Airplane quality Wifi, shared between 150+ customers. Good luck.

      • The CEO specifically said 12mbps to 24mbps per seat, using a link to a NBN Satellite. From a theoretical point of view, it's possible.

I really hope they can deliver on that.

  • Yep instead of the old how many beer cans can you drink on a Perth -> Melb flight its how many TBs can you download

  • I seem to recall that in the early mobile phone days it was implemented because the phone signal was screwing around with the Telecoms software. Something to do with different towers constantly breaking in and out of the signal, thus tying up cyber-space. Could've been a furphy for all I know.
