Logitech Harmony 515 $48.76 delivered DSE online only

100

Got spam today from tricky dicky.
Price looks ok.
Its an older model that there's obviously stocks keep 'coming out of the woodwork, but (as I understand) this things function fine.
Enjoy.

Just be warned you need a live internet connection (can be an issue if setting up for your non-connected parents as I did), plus several spare hours of patience to configure these things. Don't be fooled that logitech list your exact device on their database - you'll still probably need to tweak the config and hand-teach a few commands.

  • I got one of these from one of the logitechshop deals on here, I think it was $40 delivered.

I don't think it is that good really, and so I don't use it. The trouble is my TV has a very insensitive power on IR function. So when I use this remote, most times the tv stays off and everything else related (eg. home theater, dvd etc) turns on. But then the remote is out of sync as it thinks the tv is on.

No problem you'd think, just try again, or just press a separate button to power on the tv, but no, that aint how this thing works, that would be too easy. No, you have to go through an annoying menu system on the remote to tell it the tv is off, pressing about 6 buttons. If you don't, then when you turn everything off, the tv sometimes comes on!

So who can be arsed doing that 3 out of 4 times you turn on the tv? not me. So this remote just sits on the shelf with thr 5 others now.

    • did you try ringing the helpline?
I found them very helpful in problem solving my set up.

      • It's more of a fundamental problem with the way these remotes work and how you have to configure and use them. If it was a simple learning remote, with some add on macro features, I could easily work around it. But it doesn't allow you to do that.

Come to think of it, my 5yo Sony receiver has a learning remote with macro functions, I could have just used that and saved myself $40. I guess I got sucked in by the hype about these harmony remotes. I mean, they are so damn popular, you just have to assume they must be good. Kind of like the iPhone situation I guess.

        • I've rung them twice…both times, the service has been excellent….last time the guy was on for about half an hour …took him through what I wanted…..he programmed it his end…stayed on the line til I downloaded and tested…re-jigged if it needed tweaking. I had stuff that was not in their database, odd button combinations and button multi functions, but (eventually) it all came good.

it's worth trying…..I've replaced at least 5 button presses on at least two remotes with 2 button presses on the one remote.

        • You could add a custom button mapping to the activity you use most often (eg Watch TV) that punches through to your tv power button.

For example map one of the coloured buttons on the bottom of the remote to your tv power button using the advanced wizard interface in the setup software.

I (finally) signed up to post this tip. I love my remote, thanks bargaincrypt.

    • Got a similar problem, the TV is the least responsive, everything else is pretty rock solid.
Power on and off usually ok, but changing sources is more of a problem, either doesn't quite get to the source it was supposed to or the input button misses, and it ends up changing channels instead.
(I'm not switching through my receiver, video sources handled by the tv, audio only switching through the receiver)

There are tweaks you can apply in the Harmony software, but it is cumbersome to go through, and test.

      • Check if the tv programmed has individual/separate av buttons rather than a single source select button.
For tv power, see if there is a separate on/off button available.

These functions were not available on my original remote for my tv but were available when programming the tv model using the Logitech remote. Helped me when programming the TV av selection and power on/off. Where like you I could never get the single av input select button to work properly.

  • Since the logitechshop price has gone up this seems to be the cheapest way to get one for most people. Other opinions I've read have been very high, so it seems a great buy still.

edit: The post should be changed as these can be purchased instore, and most stores do currently have stock.

  • i had the similar logitech 525, same button layout, i didn't like how i could not even program my own macros, the set up program asks how you turn on and use your equipment and that's it, no manual editing! also, the first two times i tried installing it, the logitech website had issues and was really really slow, no way to get around that either

  • +1

TIP: This is available in-store too! I saw it today. The store availablility can be viewed on the website.

    • I bought one this afternoon: works perfectly with my Foxtel IQ box (Foxtel IQ remote eaten up by my puppy), and for $12 less than the Foxtel remote price! It also did my Vivo 32" TV, and I'm waiting for the PS3 adapter to go on sale again, then it'll do that one too.

Great software (Mac+PC), and I didn't even need my Foxtel or TV remotes for it to work.

i saw this 39.99 @ bing lee homebush bay.

    • Agree

Fluidtek Sydney and Bing Lee have these rremotes for $39.95 At $48.76 this is not a bargain for me. On a side note. The 515 is the same as the 525 only differences

      • 515 green screen black text backlit lcd.
      • 515 can replace up to 5 remotes
      • 515 Silver/Silver buttons
      • 525 blue screen and black text backlit lcd.
      • 525 can replace up to 15 remotes
      • 525 Silver/black buttons

Great remotes. Got mine from Logitechshop when they were on special a few weeks back.

For my older Sony LCD TV had to use separate on/off button rather than the standard single on/off toggle button. To work properly. Also extra shortcut buttons can be found with this remote that are not usually not available on the original remote. IE separate av input shortcuts rather than having to scroll through the external av inputs one at a time. Sleep button.
