Cheapest way to get rid of flies?

We started seeing some flies recently inside and outside (small backyard) house.
What's my best bet for getting rid of these flies? Bug spray? Flea bomb?

This should work if you are only referring flies.

I have use them for a month and caught more than hundred.

Also you can DIY, free of charge

  • Close the door!

and get on the Mortein surface spray when it's going out on special ($9 at Coles occasionally)

  • Any idea what the food source might be? Do you have a compost heap?

My neighbour uses manure as fertiliser during spring/summer and the flies come to infest like crazy… The smell is also very bad. ;-(

Also, how big are the flies? Are they the tiny ones, i.e. drain flies? If so, you might need to get the plumber in to clean your drains.

  • Swap the l and the i and then drag them to Trash. :)

    Sorry, I'm getting dsylexic. :(

  • Look around your yard and see if you have something attractive to the flies; clean up areas with decaying matter and check your compost bins, etc. Make sure you have screens on your windows and doors. I've never used a flea bomb for flies, but I have for fleas - worked very well. You need to make sure you don't have any exposed flame source when you use them though. There is a really cool episode on myth busters showing what can happen. We normally just spray them when we see them including into our rubbish bins regularly.

  • These are the most fun
Something strangely satisfying about hearing a POP and then blue sparks and smoke coming from mosquitoes and flies that have been swatted.

A flea bomb in the backyard wont even kill fleas buddy!

Learn to shut doors or invest in flyscreen doors.

Keep a flyswat handy in the kitchen

  • These fly glue ribbons are cheap, with tick of approval from hawkers' food stalls.

  • if only one or two flies are indoors and stay on the wall, I use a rubber band to shoot them down. practice makes perfect, and I am seriously pretty good with this. normally within one or two attempt. No cost, good exercise, chemical free.

  • Or practise this flies in toilet. Also no cost and chemical free but age and gender dependent.

  • Close the door. Get a fly swat and a dog. Got three flies in 5 mins the other day. Fun times.

I use canola spray oil in the kitchen when I have the odd fly. I don't want to spray poison around.

    • Eewwww, slimy residue.

      • I just wash it off. I think water in a spray bottle would work equally well. All it does is make their wings heavy and stops them flying so you can catch them with a paper towel and put them in the bin.

  • there is a guy on ebay from Tassy, makes and sells a leather/wire flyswat….works brilliantly!

    • Are you sure it's meant to be a fly swat? And not something for consenting adults to use that also conveniently doubles as a fly swat? :0

  • Get yourself a couple of frogs. Make sure they have access to water though. The dust in your house will get over then fairly quickly so they'll need to wash often.

  • Shower.

I had an infestation of fruit flies. Looking on the internet the best solution was a fly trap. I rolled some paper up into a funnel and stuck it in the top of a nearly empty wine bottle with a peice of very ripe fruit in the bottom. The fruit flys are attracted by the smell of the wine and rotting fruit, they crawl in the top to get at the fruit then don't know how to get out. Once I caught a few I put the cap on and threw the whole thing in the bin.
