Melbourne Symphony Orchestra 3 Concerts @ $50 Ea

10

MSO is offering 3 concerts for $150 for the best available seating. Note that some special tickets (eg student rush) may be cheaper if you qualify and there are also free concerts at the Myer Music Bowl. But for the regular concert program this is a great way to experience the very best that the great MSO has to offer in their main concert series. Note that at the time of writing the website was groaning under the un-accustomed load. Only way in I could find was this link: http://www.mso.com.au/subscription-series/ and scroll down to "72Hour Sale" button near the bottom of the page. After a few "page not founds" I eventually got to a list of concerts, then the site refused to let me pay, so I called the Box Office on 03 9626 1111 and booked the concerts I had chosen. Well worth the hassle to hear Handel's Messiah from the middle or row k in the stalls for $50.

  • Where is the best Symphony Orchestra in Australia? Melbourne? Sydney? Anywhere else?

    • MSO @ SOH

      • Wut?

        • Best Symphony = MSO
          Where = Sydney Opera House

        • @MITM: MSO performs at SOH (Sydney)? Is not that bit strange?

        • @bargainaus:
          I think your question should have started with "Which" referring to an orchestra, more so than the location.

          I was playing with your words.

        • @MITM: Oh, ok.

          Do you know any of the orchestras in Australia that play Movie soundtracks?

        • +1

          @bargainaus:

          Hitchcock and Herrmann are part of the "create your own season"

          http://www.mso.com.au/whats-on/2016-season/hitchcock/

        • @MITM: Hmm, Great! But I am looking for Hans Zimmer movies. :)

        • +1

          @bargainaus:
          Arghhh matey - Pirates of the Caribbean. MSO did that a few years back with the film playing on a big screen behind. Probably on YouTube.

        • @bargainaus: The Hitchcock and Hermann concert is, I regret, past. It was superb …. the visuals weren't quite up to Multiplex standard, but the uncanny effect of screeching tones of the high violins live from the Orchestra during the shower scene from Psycho more that compensated! Hans Zimmer isn't on program at the moment … but what a great idea to suggest to the MSO programming people. Nearest thing would be Nino Rota: the next Movie and Music concert is a showing of the Godfather (3 1/4 hours worth) accompanied live by the MSO on 31/3/16 and 1/4/16. Unfortunately this concert does not appear to be part of the 3 for $150 package. The concert is very heavily booked at regular prices … we got a couple of reasonable seats for $80 a couple of weeks ago, but the choice is probably more restricted now. Book soon if you want to go: you will be amazed at just how much the dynamic of a live orchestra adds to a movie!

        • @MITM: Anything along the lines of the Carry On movies, or Eddie Murphy's Coming to America?

  • Nice to see a little culture amongst the enloops and DSE deals.

    And if you get to see Australian violin virtuoso, Ray Chen performing with MSO on his (loaned) 300 year old multi-million dollar Stradivarius Violin for 50 Zacs - you'd be in heaven.
