from https://relix.com/news/detail/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard… :

In July, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announced that they would no longer host their music on Spotify. Following a precedent set by early critics Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu, and since adopted by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Cindy Lee, Hotline TNT, Skee Mask and more, the prolific, shape-shifting Australian psych ensemble attributed the move to an objection to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek’s investment in AI-powered military software.

“A PSA to those unaware: Spotify CEO Daniel Ek invests millions in AI military drone technology,” the band posted to their social channels. “We just removed our music from the platform. Can we put pressure on these Dr. Evil tech bros to do better? Join us on another platform.”

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s migration away from the world’s most popular streaming platform has spurred an exodus of fans to other services, most notably the group’s Bandcamp page, which has long been the source of choice for devotees seeking the bottomless wellspring of “Bootleg Gizzard” live albums. Today, the group responded to the surge in attention with a radical shift in their approach to their catalog, switching all of their releases to a “name your price” model.

While King Gizzard’s 27 studio albums, plus a fistful of live albums and EPs, had previously been available at a minimum $10 each, listeners can now secure unlimited streaming and downloads for the band’s entire discography for whatever price they feel is fair. The ensemble’s show of generosity and faith in their passionate fanbase has so far been rewarded with immediate recognition, overtaking the entirety of Bandcamp’s top 25 most popular digital releases.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard recently concluded their sprawling North American summer tour with Field of Vision, their inaugural curated U.S. festival, which raged at Buena Vista, Colo.’s Meadow Creek from Aug. 15-17. The band will return to the stage on Oct. 31 to set off a European tour, featuring a mix of 13 rave, rock and orchestral sets through Nov. 15, then return to Australia in December for nine performances in their home country before the end of the year. They're so unique.
Despite these guys clearly having 'a sound' and technically easily being put into 'Rock' based on technical definition; I'm so convinced that asking someone if they like rock, then playing KGATLW would always raise eyebrows.

    Rock on boys.

    • I'm not familiar with them, but 27 studio albums in 15 years doesn't scream consistent quality to me.
Happy to be proven wrong, but any suggestions where to start?

I had Polygondwanaland from a previous freebie deal here.

It's quite out there; experimental without being too nebulous (Zorn, Bungle et al) I note that WP says they're progressive/psychedelic rock which is fair too.

Suggest diving in anywhere, it's all quite good. Try some YT. I still don't know most of the compositions, and the impression given is they're improvising quite a bit.

        • Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.

This is great. It's also been really nice ditching spotify and going back to buying albums on bandcamp again. Really glad so many people (and bands) are leaving that shitty app.

Just need then to leave Apple and Amazon too though. Cut these companies down a peg or three

      • +3

I don't mind Amazon so much, because their sales are DRM free. So while still not as nice as owning the physical album, I own the digital album.
Pay once to truly own, even if digital, I'm largely OK with.

Bandcamp and Soundcloud are still my first search, though (after the artists own website) - get as much cash to the artist as possible before corporations take their cut.

        • +4

We’re talking about the same Amazon right? The one with the DRM riddled ebooks, movie and audiobook platforms?

          • +3

@csi-lk: Yup, I was talking about their music store not ebooks or movies. Those have DRM so i refuse to buy those products from Amazon.

Why is buying DRM free and saying people should be supporting the artists first getting downvotes?

            • +1

@MasterScythe: FWIW Apple also sells their music DRM free which I found surprising since it definitely didn’t start out that way.

              • @soxinthebox: Thank you, that's actually very good to know, since apple supports lossless and Amazon limits at -V0 MP3.

It looks like you might need their App to do it though; which last I tried wasn't very Linux friendly, but I'll give it a go, it's worth a look :)

    • bandcamp have a union!!

Hear hear eat shit Spotify stop ripping off artists and drone bombing children.

These guys must have shares in Seagate. That is a lot of data.

Good on them. They did something similar back in 2014 back when they only had 4 albums, albeit for different reasons:

Love their music and the cover artwork is peak.

You need to pay at least $1 for each record to have it added to your Bandcamp library. Otherwise you can download the music files (including in lossless) to your computer for free.

    • AUD$1 or USD$1?

      • $1 AUD to add to cart. I'm assuming that's the threshold for adding to your bandcamp library. Going any lower gives this message: "The minimum price you can specify is $1 AUD. Please enter either zero, or at least $1 AUD."

        • Yup, 1 AUD worked. THere was definitely chat about $1 US / 0.50 EURO being the cut off… but looks like we get away with 0.66 US :)

          $31 for the whole lot!

  • Have tickets to the Enmore show later in the year. Such a unique band

  • These guys rule!

  • Any suggestions? I tried listening to a few and didn't find any songs I liked

    • +5

Depends on what music you are into.

I prefer their earlier stuff, Nonagon Infinity, Paper Mache, Flying Microtonal Banana, MOTU, Polygondwanaland, etc

If purchased way too many of their vinyl pressings! #gottacatchthemall

      • Yeah, these albums are peak Giz

      • Thanks, gave those ones a listen and honestly still didn't find anything I liked, though I'm not really into slower rock. There were a few that were decent in Polygondwanaland but not something I'd add to my playlist.

        • +3

If you are into a faster sound check out 'Infest the Rats Nest' and 'PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation'

    • Try some live shows if you're into that. Get a better sense of the band.

A wild and mighty band. They’re awesome and powerful live. Their albums contain many genres. I hope more artists show the guts to follow their lead. They rock……

    Crumbling Castles for the win.

  • +3

That's like 274 albums by now!

  • +4

Love these guys! Made me commit OZB sin and pay $5 an album. Still a bargain!

  • The first album I heard was Quarters! and I was hooked from there. I remember just thinking the cover looked interesting and loving the vibe.

I whole heartedly recommend that if you love KGLW, check out their second bandcamp account: https://bootleggizzard.bandcamp.com/

These are all the live recording the band does for their gigs. They're really well done and very Ozbargain friendly too ($1).

wow King Gizz on ozb, what a glorious day. Can't wait for the orchestral show at the Princess!

Nice! Knock Spotify down a peg.
Also, sad to see they STILL don’t have Atmos tracks there, and for a higher price than Apple Music.

Saw an inteesting claim in a online News paper review (The Guardin I think) the Pink Floyd of their age

Pretty principled band I'm turning off Spotify in solidarity. I basically just used it to listen to Barry White and Kyuss anyway.
