In July, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard announced that they would no longer host their music on Spotify. Following a precedent set by early critics Deerhoof and Xiu Xiu, and since adopted by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Cindy Lee, Hotline TNT, Skee Mask and more, the prolific, shape-shifting Australian psych ensemble attributed the move to an objection to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek’s investment in AI-powered military software.
“A PSA to those unaware: Spotify CEO Daniel Ek invests millions in AI military drone technology,” the band posted to their social channels. “We just removed our music from the platform. Can we put pressure on these Dr. Evil tech bros to do better? Join us on another platform.”
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s migration away from the world’s most popular streaming platform has spurred an exodus of fans to other services, most notably the group’s Bandcamp page, which has long been the source of choice for devotees seeking the bottomless wellspring of “Bootleg Gizzard” live albums. Today, the group responded to the surge in attention with a radical shift in their approach to their catalog, switching all of their releases to a “name your price” model.
While King Gizzard’s 27 studio albums, plus a fistful of live albums and EPs, had previously been available at a minimum $10 each, listeners can now secure unlimited streaming and downloads for the band’s entire discography for whatever price they feel is fair. The ensemble’s show of generosity and faith in their passionate fanbase has so far been rewarded with immediate recognition, overtaking the entirety of Bandcamp’s top 25 most popular digital releases.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard recently concluded their sprawling North American summer tour with Field of Vision, their inaugural curated U.S. festival, which raged at Buena Vista, Colo.’s Meadow Creek from Aug. 15-17. The band will return to the stage on Oct. 31 to set off a European tour, featuring a mix of 13 rave, rock and orchestral sets through Nov. 15, then return to Australia in December for nine performances in their home country before the end of the year. They're so unique.
Despite these guys clearly having 'a sound' and technically easily being put into 'Rock' based on technical definition; I'm so convinced that asking someone if they like rock, then playing KGATLW would always raise eyebrows.
Rock on boys.
