Canceling a Direct Debit - Village Theme Parks Unlimited Membership

So I purchased the Village Theme Parks Unlimited Membership a few weeks ago. The website says there is a 12 month minimum for the membership but it only charges you $9 per month as a subscription based product.
The $9/month is taken as a direct debit through Debitsuccess.

Is it possible to cancel this after only a month or two of use?

  • Did you sign a contract or verbally make one? If so it's like a gym membership, you have to pay for it whether you want to continue using it or not.

Would it be an option to get someone else to take it over?

Nope, it is a contract. If your bank account has insufficient funds or you close it they have every right to pass you on to debt collectors.

    • It is a contract, do you think they would send to debt collectors for $108? I don't think they would, but could be wrong!

As they were closing down, the local Blockbuster Video sent debt collectors after me for $3.50 in late fees.

Well, looks like I'm 100% not risking that!

In practical terms, there is nothing you can do to cancel a direct debit, other than closing the account that the debit is being made from.

Only the company doing the direct debit can cancel it, by ceasing to debit your account.

Debt collectors get their money as a percentage of the debt, and by adding fees to the debt. Any debt is still worth their while.
