Need new smart TV any suggestions please?

Hi, I want to buy a 32 inch Smart TV for my 89 year old father, in Adelaide. So that he can use with headphones and access the internet for catch up TV etc. I have looked in Good Guys and they recommended a Samsung FHD,LCD,LED. For $578. Any recommendations for a cheaper TV please? Thanks.

  • For your dad this one looks OK: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/233450

    • Thanks for the suggestions. My dad already has a Soniq TV that my brother bought him a couple of years ago. I should explain the reason why I am looking at getting a new one. My mother complains Dad has the TV volume too loud, so I was going to buy him some head phones. Apparently, the Soniq TV that he has does not have an audio output or outlet for a head phone plug. It's for the bedroom so 40 inch is probably the maximum size I would go for. Dad usually ends up watching catch up TV on his computer wearing head phones. So I thought I would buy a "smart" TV so he can watch catch up TV through the internet. I have seen a Hisense 40 inch online at JB for $498.

Chromecast + TV > "smart" TV

  • I love my Samsung TV, its one of the higher end models but there's nothing better than doing youtube searches with voice (and youtube is used more and more these days when people come over - nicer experience than using a phone). The remote is also a pointer design so its easy to navigate. Starting apps is a trivial affair with the quick menu (rather than loading an app launcher), and the same menu can be used to switch AV sources. Speaking of AV sources, it detects when I turn one of my consoles on and switches to the appropriate channel, which is handier than you think for users who don't know their way around tech. I'm sure the lower end ones would atleast have some of the features mentioned since I can't imagine software changing much between models, but food for thought.

Now, on the contrary, we bought my parents a 'cheap' android tv and its the absolute worst for them. Mostly because it relies heavily on being more software than hardware. Besides being slow to do most things, simple tasks like switching AV source requires going through the settings and then one or two further sub menues. For parents with poor eye sight, it was the worst. When they want to use their DVD player, half the time they're calling me to come over or just not using it because a few misclicks gets them lost in the settings. And no, there is no direct button on the remote.
