For a time I thought 2017 is refer the year…..

    • +1

Haha! Well I can make it $2016 if you like :)

Would this not be better for $2076 (4K screen, 4GB Graphics, lighter)

It depends what you want from your laptop. Zenbook is limited in terms of storage and RAM options and for me the 4k screen is wasted money. In a 15" laptop, anything over 2k res is pointless. The Metabox has two display ports and a HDMI port, so it can drive additional 4k displays at a more appropriate screen size.

I also think that the Zenbook is ugly, but that's purely a subjective and personal thing. ;-)

Also, the page you linked to lists the Zenbook at AU $2,595.00

      • fair enough..

(there is 20% off at the moment on ebay)

        • +2

Wow 20% is a massive amount on laptops. Margins are usually 3%-8%.
So is eBay footing the bill for 20% off or do they force the seller to cough up?
          Kris

        • +1

@Kong Computers: ebay covers the difference. they do get some back from fee imposed on sellers i believe

      • You think the Zenbook is ugly? Wow, I absolutely love the design. Different strokes for different folks I guess haha.

    • A 970M is much faster than a 960M, this would be a better comparison (-SSD +Windows)

      MSI GE62 6QF $1759.2

      • right.. Thanks… (not bad then for $1760) Sorrry OP.. just comparing

also thin body and powerful graphic card dont go along very well usually

    • Looks like cooling would be an issue when playing serious games. Also GTX960, which is not as powerful. Depends on what you want to use it for, at the end of the day.

I got one of these in October, from Kong and can highly recommend Kris for excellent customer service.

No need to run Windows on these. I've got Linux working perfectly on a P650RE with i7-6820HK.

The only donwside to this laptop is that it has a finger print scanner between the two mouse buttons, where it should have had a middle mouse button. Perhaps Metabox can fix that on future models.

The IPS screen is excellent and you can fit two M.2 drives and two 7mm 2.5" drives for oodles of storage.

Good to hear, on the fingerprint thing, these are just rebranded generic whitebox models, not up to them. I've found most of these whitebox models include the fingerprint scanners.

      Cheers Peter,
Yes that was back in October. I think you were going away and needed the laptop by a certain date, if my memory serves me correctly :)

      Kris

Yep, that was me. Got the laptop delivered in time to set it up for the trip and it's been great. It's been overseas a few times now and so far I like it much better than the HP I used to have before the Metabox. The more powerful CPU option is definitely worth it for my usage. Now I'm just waiting for 2TB or bigger SSDs to come down to a reasonable price so that I can replace the spinning rust HDD.

  • So am I right in thinking this has the $228 upgrade already applied?

Also does anyone know what sort of pcie speeds you would get with this if you wanted to use/add an external gpu later on? I was reading the other night that people have started just buying desktop gpus and rigging them up on their laptops.

    • That's correct, the laptop would be $1789 without the 250GB M.2 SSD (+$129) and 1TB 7200RPM (+$99) = $228.
      Kris

  • I have a Clevo/Metabox with an 860M. I got it about, what? 18 months ago I guess….

Don't see the point of dropping $2k in this day and age when it won't run Oculus Rift.

    • Well if you want to run VR, it will be a long way to go for laptops. Just not enough juice.

Laptop gaming is a different market, which I never understood because I went from laptop gaming to desktop gaming, saved money and get major performance boost.

    • If you want a laptop that can do vr its going to cost you alot.
There's a sager notebook which runs desktop cpu and graphics inside a notebook.

  • Hi Rep,
Can the M.2 SSD 2 be installed with another samsung 950 pro pcie ssd?
I tried to select M.2 SSD 1 with samsung 950 pro 256gb pcie ssd, but the M.2 SSD 2 has no 950 pro pcie ssd option available.

Was thinking to configure both slot as raid 0.

    • Hi Kei,
Unfortunately not. The Samsung 950 Pro PCIe M.2 SSD is too big and blocks the 2nd M.2 slot. So only 1 x PCIe SSD or 2 x M.2 SSD's.

  • Hey OP. Does this model support G-Sync?

  • Hey Kris,

I'm also looking at that exact configuration which Saaron was looking at. Can you pm me if you can also do something?

    Cheers

    • Hi Astroboy18,
It appears that your PM is not activated.
Could you send me a PM and I can reply or activate PM's on your account?

      Cheers
      Kris

      • Hi Kris,

Are you able to get my PMs? I sent one as a test.

        Cheers

        • Yes, I just sent one through, Cheers
          Kris

  • Hi Kris,

Thanks for the recent deals. Just wondering what the best price you can do on the above laptop with the 24gb ram upgrade and Windows 10 home? Also would it be possible to get a better deal without the peripherals as I plan to run this mainly for racing games with a wheel and otherwise for work.

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Cheers

    • Thanks docmartin,
Could you send me a PM as your messages function is not enabled.

      Cheers
      Kris
