Wireless Access Point with URL Blocking

I am trying to add a wirelss access point for 1 particular user on my network.
Basically they will have their own wireless access point with url blocking.

Everyone else will access the internet via our normal router
Person 1 will not be allowed onto the normal router via MAC blocking.

Person 1 will have their own access to the internet with certain websites bocked
- for example facebook , gmail, etc
The idea here is that she can check bus timetables, do uni work, but not have any fun on the network :)

This second 'person1' wireless access point can be added via a network cable to the existing router.

Ideas, suggestions, tips ?

Oh no! Person 1 has been looking at bad things!

    Naughty naughty, you'll get caughty!!

  • hmm… all about finding the right router. I dont know of any off the top of my head that is a good price at the moment. however, food for though, assuming you can follow a youtube tutorial or two.. have a look at pfsense on virtualbox. opensource OS system that will give you your needs and more! cost you nothing :)

  • Thanks for the suggestion. I am working on resurecting an old router I have to use as her access point. Since posting I have found its power supply :)

She hasn't been looking at the wrong things, she just needs to be put back in her box, but still have internet access for study.

Blocking her apple TV was relatively easy :)

  • I hear the Synology router is pretty good at that sort of stuff. You can block categories of websites even. Tonnes of other features too.

  • You didn't specify price ranges lol…

You could put a meraki firewall and an access point for a few grand and have some pretty nice filtering and layer 7 firewalling.

  • Cisco Linksys EA4500 have parental controls.

  • Thanks all - My normal netgear router has parental control, but that requires an app be installed on the target client.
This is something I want to avoid.

airzone - if I was going to spend a few grand on a router I would be paying for her to live somewhere else :)

Similarly I dont want to block anyone else in the house for accessing any website - only little miss rude and obnoxious.

  • a $50 router loaded with ddwrt will do the trick.

  • Some feedback…

I managed quite easily to configure my spare router to access the internet as an access point.
Unfortunately it only acts as a wireless/wired switch, so all the blocked websites that I set up are not considered.
    Lets call this ROUTER2

However ROUTER1 does allow website blocking, and has a single safe IP that can bypass the blocking filters.
So I might configure ROUTER1 for the naughty kids, and reserve the IP of ROUTER2 Access point as the safe IP.
That way anyone who connects to router 2 can still access the internet.

ROUTER2 also has 4 separate SSIDS, which I used at one stage for each child plus a parent, so that I could turn them off separately.
This unfortunately is no longer an option as they need the internet for school.
So basically then each child has 2 options:
    - connect to the limited ROUTER1
    - connect to their own unlimited ROUTER2, if their SSID is activated :)

I know passwords on ROUTER2 can be shared though ….

At this stage I am trying to avoid investing in new hardware.

    Thoughts?

  • URL blocking site will allow the user with limited access to different websites.

Now this feature is available easily with any anti virus and vpn so not all the work with router 1 and router 2 with SSID activation is necessary.
