Favourite Tomato Sauce / Ketchup?

Hey team - just wanting to understand what you like in Tomato Sauce

I like Masterfoods - or Dick Smith which seems quite similar - but I note that thicker richer sauces like Heinz seem to be more popular overseas.

Where is White Crow Tomato Sauce ?

Yep. Poll is useless without the best sauce on it (glass bottle, not the plastic crap).

  • heinz tomato sauce

    Aldi Colway.

Anyways I just buy whatever. I can't tell any difference.

The main difference is in the bottle. I need a squeezy bottle not a glass one or a 2L bulk one. But I do hate the upside down Heinz bottle - you can't control the flow or aim very well.

  • This… has a very distinctive taste unlike anything else, almost tastes like a chutney. Can get it from any shop that sells South Africa products, and have occasionally seen it at other supermarkets

I once sent in a massive complaint to Heinz in regards to their 'EZ Squeeze' products.

I said that you basically have to drive a v-line train thats running express through Nar Nar Goon with your arm out the window in order to apply the right amount of sauce otherwise you end up doing this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c6EGvSeDiI

For that reason, I hate Heinz, dont even care how good their stuff is.

I'll eat anything that isnt salt reduced.

  • I'm not too fussy, fountain tomato sauce or coles brand… both good!

I personally prefer to go a tomato chutney or BBQ sauce over tomato sauce/ketchup.

yeah go a good relish, or head straight for bbq. the beerenberg coopers ale bbq sauce is my fave

      • I've tried a couple of beerenberg items, will have to look out for that one.

    • My favourite "BBQ" sauce was Ooo Ahh Glenn McGrath, sadly no longer made :/
It tasted like a hybrid between tomato and BBQ. And sure enough, I've just confirmed that on its IP Australia page:
"Tomato based hickory flavoured sauce in two varieties; standard delivery and big bouncer - hot"

      Bring it baaaaaack!

  • Smokey BBQ from Masterfoods is awesome!

    • Agreed! Have you tried their BBQ Rib sauce? It is amazing

    MON tomato sauce

    • Agreed! Australian owned too, I believe.

  • P.S. it's spelt Rosella, y'know, like the bird!

  • Hmm, I don't use sauces, including tomato sauce:-) . If your steak or sausage is good, it should be enough just to user salt & pepper LOL.

  • For those who love Ketchup vs Sauce.

The basis for the difference, is Ketchup is sauce plus vinegar.

Simple squeeeze out some of the sauce from a cheaper - or one on special. Coles has Masterfoods 500ml on special this week $1.42

Then add some vinegar to the bottle. Shake and taste.

If you like more tang in your ketchup, add more vinegar and re-shake.

Personally I prefer Balsamic Vinegar, but ordinary Vinegar works.

    • This is why myself and most other immigrants I know only buy ketchup. I refer to all of the products called tomato "sauce" as tomato jam as I find them extremely sweet.

    • 2 of the 3 different branded tomato sauces in my cupboard list acetic acid in the ingredients. Isn't that vinegar?

I always just buy whatever's on sale since the kiddos aren't fussy and they're the only ones who eat it.

      • I think all tomato sauce has some vinegar. But ketchup has a higher proportion of vinegar to sugar.

  • Needs to be another box for HATE tomato sauce LOL!!

  • Nowadays I don't use tomato sauce. After looking at the ingredients I "upgraded" to tomato paste.
