Anyone here bought Lenovo before? Seems like service is non existent? http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1996210

    • "lead_org writes…
@prf, i have got your two private message, will escalate it on Monday for you.

      I'm pleased to hear that.

None of the other escalations has made any difference until now but I am buoyed by your helpfulness in these threads.

      Thanks."

looks even in whirlpool someone from IBM was trying to help, lead_org was helping the whole time, so does that answer your question?

      • +1

You are right. I just read the moaning and skimmed past the resolutions. They are Chinese owned now so 6 years ago is not really a good reference. I heard the quality has been going down.

    • Yeah, they are not nice to deal with for the past several years (I can't believe they have not gotten better yet!), they used to be good when they are owned by IBM.

Their telephone-line is very buggy. I tried to call them today and the phone just went silent, busy tone, or they say its closed. (even though it still 2pm and they are supposed to close at 6).

In term of actual service they are a bit hit or miss. (they are not as clear cut as some company like Apple for instance). If you have issue, like a defect, you can get a support person say its normal, and insist on it, and another that can actually fix them.

If you have problem, best option is to contact via alternate channel, or contact lead_org, he'll get you right through the senior customer relation.

But if you want a windows notebook. They have really great hardware. The keyboard and the trackpoint is awesome.

  • Will I be able to claim airport 9% VAT on this?

    • We don't have VAT in Australia.

      • opps, I meant GST.

        • In that case, Yes you can claim back the GST if you bring the laptop with you overseas.

        • YES,lucky you bro…u could almost save $160 including CR.that brings the laptop down to around $828.Hope i could FLY.

        • @Hasslefree: Still thinking about it, burned $400+ on ctechie already. Wonder if the invoice is going to quote the full price for GST calculation purposes, which is the case for those ebay purchase.

        • @xabiso: Yes the invoice quotes the GST(mine did).Go ahead and buy it if u want something like a surfacebook.

Thanks TA for a great deal…cancelled “dell inspiron 15 7000 2-in-1” order on ebay and bought the thinkpad.
For all of those friends out there who r thinking whether to buy it or not…I'll give few good reasons to go ahead and buy.
    1.It comes with a “m.2 16gb ssd”+ 1TB hdd..
the m.2 ssd can be replaced with larger capacity 42mm m.2 ssd…currently around 100 USD for 256gb on amazon.so keep HDD and ssd.
2.It comes with a rechargeable pen(stylus) where as dell sells for 79AUD…takes AAAA battery.
3.Fingerprint reader…for those people who know how to use it to login to emails etc,its a BIG plus.
4.you have upgrade options unlike ebay.
5.I personally think its better build quality than inspiron.
    6.1.8kg vs 2.1 kg.
For less than half the price of a surface book.you get similar specs.
This is totally from my point of view.Hope this helps someone.
Also dont worry if u bought the dell,u can ask them to cancel the order if u want.
    My first comment…

    • Would it be okay to use a HDD-based storage on a tablet/convertible device?

      • +1

Normally its slower than a SSD,but with 16gb M.2 it should not be that BAD,if u r already using a SSD then it'll be frustrating.I particularly bought this because of its SURFACE BOOK like capabilities and a bit more.If u dont need a touchscreen, the latest lenovo $888 deal is the best. But i have to wait until 5th of april for the delivery.

        • Hey, thanks for the reply!

I don't think I would mind too much about the speed of the drive. As you said it even got a ssd cache - so the speed should be pretty brisk.

I was more concerned about moving a device around that is equipped with a mechanical spinning drive. With that hinge, I would imagine it need to be pretty robust, as the HDD would be subjected a lot of spinning around and off axis shock from having it placed in a 'tent' mode. And placed upside down in 'presentation' mode.

Would it be safe to use this device, knowing that it is equipped with HDD in tablet mode?

        • +1

@ahoihoi:They say its made of carbon fibre on top and magnesium alloy casing.so the hdd thing shud be taken care of.if it is still made like the old thinkpads u shud not have to worry,if not god knows whats going to happen.

        • @Hasslefree: I decided to get the 256GB SSD instead of sticking with the 1tb HDD (even though ideally I would want 512gb minimum), and try to come up with something somehow should I need more space than this.

          Reason being:
          - Increase in reliability, So no worrying about moving and bumping the device around.
          - Increase performance (faster, more responsive device)
          - Less heat
          - Better power consumption (more battery life)
          - No need to be mindful about disk fragmentation

I was after a desktop replacement of sort, but I think with this config, this device could turn out to be a pretty versatile workhorse.

And when it comes time to retire the notebook, I could end up with a device that is capable of being a true (if heavy and bulky) tablet.

          Thanks for the advice! :D

    • Can you upgrade the m.2 ssd AND the HDD to SSD?

      • Yes you can.But before ordering just double check if u select any SSD,will they leave the m.2 ssd slot free or there is no more m.2 slot.coz for $30/128gb its great deal.

  • -2

No dedicated graphics card. So obviously not for gaming. Pass.

  • BTW,dell 2-in-1 from ebay just got posted…
Someone's not doing there job right.should let`em know its cancelled.

    • +1

You can return it easily when you receive it from dell.

      • Already informed'em the issue, they should wait a long time if i have to return it.Just like us waiting to get a laptop fixed.
PAY'EM BACK IN THE SAME COIN.

  • How the trackpad on this? Is it usable? I've used other Yoga's before albeit older and I hated the trackpad. Is it better now?

Going overseas next month, so that's the GST off the

Is this okay to travel with? Just worried about the weight.

    • By the look of it,they brought back the traditional trackpoint buttons, which is good.other than that can't really comment on that.compared to surfacebook it weighs 300 gram more at 1.8 kg(starting),which is not bad at all.Hope this helps..

This or the Acer R5-471T for $933 from JB? https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/laptops/acer/ace…
    It's 1.85cm thick, 1.9kg and has I believe a 62 Whr battery? http://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/model/NX.G7WAA.006

    • JBHIFI - Acer
only 4gb memory, can be upgraded
only 128Gb SSD, can be upgraded
      no m2 port
      no Finger Print Reader
      no pen
      no Dispalyport
And looks like missing a back light keyboard
Acer does not say what wifi chip its using so i am unable to confirm if its a low bandwidth chip.

only thing Acer has in ports that the Thinkpad does not, the Type-C USB.

Thinkpad looks like a match better machine, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsaRv8g8zFQ

      • backlit keyboard would be big for me

        • The us version comes with back light keyboard, so the Australian model should come with it also.

    • Clarification: It seems the R5-471T at JB Hi-Fi only has a 48 Whr battery.

    • So my order maybe cancelled, even after the fact they have my money?

TAYOGA in indeed a Lenovo code. I deal directly with Lenovo via CR. You have nothing to worry about.

  • Sorry for a dumb question, but what is the "16GB M.2 Solid State Drive" used for. I'm assuming it would be too small to install the operating system? Would it be better to get this and the 1TB hard drive, or just get the 128GB SSD?

    • new win install I assume would be way under 10 GB

      • maybe more trouble then that's worth, i believe its been used for speeding up app/data, on usage so a (cache) drive

        • Yes. I think I'd prefer a ~250 GB M.2 drive for OS and all apps.

        • @Phoebus: The 250gb on lenovos website is not m2 but standard liteon 2.5" drive. Source: lenovo website.

    • +2

Get the 256GB and call it a day. It is less than $150 upgrade and the amount of time and frustration you'll save more than make up for it.

What is a "16GB M.2 Solid State Drive" used for?

      It is a caching drive.

Few years back when SSD were tremendously expensive and capacity was really tiny (still sort of is), Intel come up with a feature that the manufacturer or yourself can elect to use it. It works by caching your most frequently used data from the hard disk to a Small Form Factor (SFF), small capacity, low priced flash based storage. This is done so that the computer can boost the perceived performance of the HDD to that of an SSD. (Selecting the SSD option seems to replaced this M.2 drive with a higher capacity one, and remove the 2.5" storage. If you are brave enough, you can open the underside of the notebook and install your own 7mm(?) thick SSD/HDD)

As to the question of HDD vs SSD, if you want to use this device as it was intended (as a convertible notebook/tablet) you definitely want the SSD for the durability.

      • HDD storage tend to not like being moved around too much. The Yoga is designed to be flipped around, moved around, knocked about - it even advertised something called the 'tent' mode! Personally, I am not comfortable handling a device like this knowing that a moving, spinning disk drive is inside it.

As to which SSD capacity you should select, depends on how big of a primary storage you need. I think the 256gb SSD option represent the best value. (the one I personally pick - yes I bought one)

      • It comes equipped with OPAL (the only one of the three SSD option), which is a disk encryption standard - so if you want the option of higher security, you can use that. (The notebook also already comes equipped with fingerprint scanner and dedicated Trusted Platform Module, so if you want to complete the circle…)

      • Higher capacity drive tend to have highest performance. Also, the more free space it has, the better the SSD's wear limiting system can work (SSD has limited write/rewrite endurance).

      Other benefits:

      • Faster, more responsive performance. (that will mean anywhere from faster boot up, sleep/wake, opening programs, to smoother web browsing)

      • Less power consumption (more battery life)

      • Less heat (self explanatory)

      • Less noise (SSD is practically dead silent)

      • Less weight (Heavy HDD will be removed, and in place will be a tiny small card instead)

A windows 10 clean install should be around 20+gb (quoted from microsoft "16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS). You add the prereinstalled program and the recovery partition then it will occupied around 35gb of the storage. 128GB will show as 112GiB under windows. 112-35=77GiB. So you can expect to have 70GiB available. Bear in mind that it is generally advisable to leave around some free sapce, then you can expect to fill the drive with around 60gb of storage and files. That is if you were to choose the 128gb drive option.

  • Thank you again TA for this deal. Have placed an order with 128GB SSD at $1,018 after Code before CR. When chose to upgrade 1TB hard drive to 128GB SSD, it cost $30 extra as it's like trading in that hdd and 16GB M2, also means less weight and sligthly better battery life.

  • Hi,can someone tell whats ur estimated shipping and delivery days are like?definitely not 6 business days..i ordered on 15/3 and shipping-25/3 & delivery 4/4,estimated i shud mention.

    • same delivery date. No idea about "ships in 6 business days"

  • Thanks TA. I've been looking into the yoga 900 for weeks, and it is stunning, but the lack of ports on it and the overall bang for buck had me on the fence.

Went for the Yoga 460 i7 6600u, 3k screen and 16gb ram. Will fit my own 512gb SSD, and like the fact I can add a larger M.2 drive down the line. Came in at $2100 with a ThinkPad dock and ~$150 back via CR in June. These ThinkPads are pretty sturdy too.

    Awesome - cheers!

  • Anyone received theirs yet?

    • ordered on 15th,shipped on 18th with tracking number which does not work.lets see what'll happen…
also ordering a 256gb m.2 ssd from amazon
      (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NY4VIPA/ref=s9_simh_gw_g…) so waiting for both.

      • As for items shipped out on 18-Mar, now already arrived Sydney airport, and waiting for customs clearance.

In addition, I am interest in 16GB DDR3L Ram, but it is too expensive yet for US$160.

        • if you can sell your 8gb ram for around 40$,that should be fine right?

You can lodge an enquiry with Cashrewards on their website, I have done this successfully for other large purchases which weren't tracked properly.

        • Thanks for that. I didn't know about the ability to lodge an enquiry. I have lodged one and will wait and see… it can't hurt :-)

  • anyone out there still contemplating?

"Couldn't see 16gb ssd in my computer.so don't know how to clone once i get 256gb". Did you open the laptop or look at the system information. As this is a catching drive it won't show up in system information but will show up in boot mode.

I feel like a dumbass for not jumping on this. Here's hoping there are some good deals on the Yoga X1 in the near future.

    • Me too. I was so close and then stupidly I didn't pull the trigger. I'm hoping this deal comes back again.

      • Me too, I was so close myself, such a great deal. Nevertheless, I decided that I should stick with my 2.7kg lenovo y510p beast/brick for now until I truly need portability and pen input.

  • It appears Lenovo offers this laptop with 4G LTE whereas Australian models get No Wireless WAN support. Can I add Wireless wan to this computer? I currently tether from my phone but would much rather get a second sim and slot it in. Any help would be appreciated.

Still great for the price but this could be the reason for the special price.

  • received yesterday
wifi drop out every 10mins+ very slow

    and

    pen is not working all

    • Just got mine, wifi is ok so far, but I have found that the pen is marking the screen - http://imgur.com/rYoL1fB

      • update: Lenovo is going to arrange a replacement, as i also found that a USB port is faulty.

        • Got mine on the 4th, but the track pad is faulty (does not bounce back).
The replacement was ordered two weeks ago and still not arrived yet.

Contacted Lenovo after sale department and was told that there are some quality issues going on, so no ETA at the moment.

        • @DW: Did they get it sorted for you. Mine is doing the same and I have LCD bleed in the bottom left that I just noticed while watching game of thrones.

        • @El Grande: The replacement has not even been shipped yet. It has been a month since the replacement was ordered and the estimated shipping date keeps being pushed back since then. Contacted Lenovo a lot of times in the meantime and was told that they do not have the exact shipping date yet. Very disappointed.

        • @DW: My track pad gets stuck in the bottom right hand side corner. If I press on the top left hand side it bounces back up. Is this the same issue you are having? I don't use click much so its been a non issue for me.

I am more worried about back light bleed. I am not sure if this is LED glare? Bottom right hand side of the screen there are waves of light that move away from where the hinges are on the screen when I move the screen back and forth. I have to log this but have been super busy.

Do you have the same problem?

        • @El Grande: The problem of my track pad happened at the opposite position of yours. I noticed that the track pad is not quite centred (there is a gap between the track pad and the chassis at right whereas no gap at left).

For the back light bleed, it happens at the bottom and top right on mine, but they are not that noticeable. I think most of the IPS screens nowadays have back light bleed more or less. My macbook pro retina has the same issue as well.

What really concerns me was the reply from Lenovo that they have been experiencing quality issues of the Thinkpad Yoga 460 and that's why my replacement order has been kept pushing back. Lenovo did not comment in details in regards to what kind of quality issues they are facing though. I am worried that if all the Thinkpad Yoga 460 have the quality issues or if the issues are only associated with the newly produced ones.
