I went through a bit of a flashlight craze, my opinion is that the battery should either be a double a or Triple A variety not the 18650

    • This. The little Cree C3 I think it is, AA but can take an extension tube to make it last longer, they're a good lil torch. Have one somewhere around the house lol but when I knew where it was, it was damn handy.

I think they used to be under $10 or $15 from DX at the time.

      • I have that still. Unfortunately, it has a fatal design flaw where the battery no longer makes a good contact with the spring in the tail end and requires repair before it works again. The light will flicker on and off after some time, making it unusable.

I've tried time and time again to lengthen the spring with a pair of pliers but in the end just tossed the C3 into the bin.

    • I have this one:

      comes with a holster.

It can take either Triple AAA or a single 18650 battery. Simply insert the lithium battery into the plastic tube, then replace the original AAA holder.

      Very, very bright light too.

There's one problem I have with this model, is that everytime you give it a violent shake (e.g when it's mounted on my bicycle and I go over a kerb) it causes it to switch modes! The tail clicky mechanism is probably not very good quality.

If you're going to sell a flashlight make sure it's durable. This one, and the Cree C3 mentioned above are both lemons, IMO.

  • I make sure it works in the dark

  • The tail switches on the cheap ones are very unreliable. I don't buy them any more.

Interestingly, the exact same questions and wording of OP could apply to a fleshlight!

  • I think they should be heavy and have sharp ridges on the bulb end

And have three horns as you can never find a horn when you 're mad

And they should play La Cucaracha

  • 1) Design and quality (spec, parts used, grade of material, finishing, looks special feature)
    2) Brand and reputation (realibikity/durability/logetivity/proven-performance)
    3) Parts availability (and the option to use easy to source AA battery) (for EDC I like single AA sized torch)
    4) Ease of use.
    5) Price

    What feature?
    Long battery life
    Adjustable brightness
Adjustable throw (short and wide, long and focused)
Rechargable battery (NIMH aa, with built in micro USB charger)
    Electronic regulation
    Modular design (ease of repair)
    Crushproof
    Waterproof

    Battery indicator

    Charge by shaking/winding. (Kinetic charging)

    Even more out there idea:
Rollup solar panel for charging from the handle of the unit

Must have reasonable screen, reasonable battery. Don't care about 4g tho. Probably go mid range, and stick to trusted brand like Google, lg etc.

        • Lol, got it!

  • the best flashlight the one I have is a watchman's torch very bright

  • What Do You Look for When You Buy Flashlight?

I look for a single AA Cree Q5 for under $5

  • Fluent English.

  • I would be looking for street signs that tell me I've hit the big time and moved to the United States of America. We don't use 'flashlights' in Australia. We use torches. Learn the word. Use it.

(And please forgive me, but I don't like American words creeping into our vocabulary. We are a unique country, let's keep it that way!)

    • It pays to be careful though. No problems from ASIO/police/NSA/MI5 etc if you say that you're going to shine a flashlight on a building. But if you say online that you're going to 'torch' a building, expect a police raid, detention for 28 days without a lawyer and for news reports to say that you were planning a terrorist attack. If you're really unlucky, you could find your tinfoil hat confiscated as well.

All of that out of the way, I have some repairs to do in the roof cavity of my house. Any suggestions for a good value, bright, reliable household torch rather than running down the battery on my Nexus 5X?

  • I mostly look for cheap high quality brands, like the Convoy S-series. Thinking about picking up an S3 soon. For me 18650 is the perfect size.
One complaint I have though, is that I cant find a way to filter by batteries and similar categories, it would make finding what you want more easy.

    • I don't care for maximum brightness.
    • I care for maximum battery life.
    • I like waterproof.
    • I care about a durable body that doesn't crack or warp from abuse.
    • I don't need maximum long distance visibility. Not when walking & not on the bike.
    • When I see torches sell for hundreds, I laugh.

Headlamps are better in most domestic situations around the home, in my experience. They keep your hands free. Only sometimes the torch is better. This has been my experience. I enjoy focusable torches sometimes. Still haven't found one with a great low setting with maximum battery life (and that also happens to sell for under $10). The main thing the manufacturers go for seems to be maximum brightness. I don't care about this.

I also have a small 1xAAA battery tiny metal-bodied torch. Comes in useful when I need it. It has long battery life.

On the bike I simply want something that flashes (and is waterproof). I also want it cheap so the Nanny State can be satisfied that I am 'safe' (and so they can make a lot of free revenue if I don't comply).

If you found a focusable flashlight that you like except for the modes, then you could try order a new driver and replace it. Something with "moonlight" mode could be what you're looking for. Requires some soldering, that's it.
