My concern is that after the stapler is purchaed, the Op doesnt get the very best deal on the Actual staples.

OP there's four places. There's the Stapler Hut, that's on third.
There's Staplers-R-Us, that's on third too. You got Put-Your-Staple-There.
That's on third. Staple Low, Sweet Fastener… Matter of fact, they're all in the same complex; it's the staple complex on third, in the stapler district!

Be careful of cheap staplers, they might have chipped the staples and you can't buy generic staples. Also the starter staples are fewer. :P
Aliexpress has some good deals on staplers at the moment.
How big or small? How many pages of documents? How often do you use it? Look, shape or sizes matter to you?
If only few pages documents and one off, I would pull the staple from an old document at the corner, reshape and recycle, push the staple with fingers to new document, flattened it then done. No need to buy a stapler.
