Best Australian Red and White Wine?

Looking to buy a bottle of Red and White wine for the father in law.

Im going overseas with 2 kids so would prefer to either buy it then bubble wrap the crap out it for check in, or probably easier to pick it up on duty free when leaving.

I am looking to spend up to $300 aud for the 2 bottles.

Now im no wine drinker so looking for some help.

At that price point I'd be looking at a Penfolds Bin 389.

Bin 389 is great, but recent vintages are only around $60-$90, so you could go a bit higher.

But Penfolds is the iconic Australian (red) wine brand so I'd just move up and down their range until you hit something suiting the budget.

For some extra wow factor, I'd probably get the 1.5L Bin 389 which conveniently hits $150, or perhaps the Penfolds RWT which is around $150 for a regular 750ml.

(For my palate, there's no point going beyond Bin 389 as whatever added quality there is is so nuanced that its just not worth the money.)

And so the fanciest sentence in OzBargain comment history came to be.

Great suggestion Gordon, even I want to drop $150 on this bottle of wine now.

I'd recommend getting it before you go and packing well in the center of your suitcase.. I don't find duty free in australia that great. you might save 5%-10% but there is the hassle of selecting the wine from a limited choice and then carting it around the airport when you have other things to think about..

what is the alcohol/customs limit of the country you are going to?

have a look at this link to the Australian listing James Halliday top 100 wines of 2015

it has 5 categories (click on tabs under the headline)- whites under $20, whites over $20, reds under $20, reds over $20, Champagne &
    Australian Sparkling.

Henschke Mt Edelstone for red: https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_10845/henschke-moun…

    Giaconda Chardonnay for white: https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_347831/giaconda-cha…

Chuck a Penfolds in there with the remaining cash in case the father in law has no clue on Aussie wines except for 'iconic' labels

    Good luck!

(Dan's doesn't have stock but you can find them at smaller places/independent winestores - probably a bit dearer though)

Alternatively, definitely in stock, look at Grant Burge Meshach and Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay

  • Wow thank you everyone!!!!

Will check out the list tonight :)

  • If you have time go to a proper wine shop (Not Dans) and have a chat to someone about your needs.

If your father in law loves his Aussie wines then get something special to have with dinner one night AND something nice to put away for the next visit.

Where are you going out of interest?

Im going overseas with 2 kids so would prefer to either buy it then bubble wrap the crap out it for check in,

Buy some wine travelling packs they are reusable so well worth it. Also wrap the bottles in a towel so in the event they break you don't have red wine on everything…

  • Why only two bottles? You could get 4 or 6 excellent wines for that budget.
Are you going somewhere where the duty on arrival would be prohibitive?
