Toyota Echo went over curb in car park, now makes sound

Dear ozbargainers,

I was driving out of the car park when I turned a tight corner slowly and the back wheel hit the curb and I continued to driveover it. And now when I come to a slow break at below the speedo of 40km/h, the back wheel affected by the curb starts making makes a clunking sound.

Car: Toyota Echo 2003

Does anyone know what happened to my back left wheel?

Is there any vibration from the corner? Is it happening while under brakes? Anything loose in the suspension? Is there any wobble in the wheel when you jack up the affected corner? Does the clunking sound happen once, or does it keep happening while slowing down? Under heavy brakes, does it pull to one side?

Actually on second thoughts, you'd better take it to a mechanic. If the above info is all you have thought to provide, you shouldn't play around with it yourself.

Before you head to the mechanic, take a look under there for a guard or other bit that was deformed and is now rubbing? The higher frequency at faster speeds blends it into a steady sound. Similarly, there isn't a piece of gravel lodged in the tread or similar?

    • yeah at faster speeds the noise blends into a steady sound. Ok, thanks @mskeggs will have a look today

  • don't muck with your or someone else's life, take it to a mechanic!

  • probably the wheel cover

  • Also check the wheel nuts are still all there, and re-tighten them. Loose wheel nuts can make a clunking noise.

If that does reduce the clunking noise, possibly the wheel nuts or studs have been damaged. At the very least I'd be taking the wheel off and inspecting them closely.
