Discount Local Groceries and Food

Hi Ozbargainers,

My friends and I are working on launching a platform where
- local groceries/restaurants can advertise their daily specials
- local restaurants can advertise their daily excess food at discount prices before end of business
- users can view any deals/offers near their area/suburb

Therefore, we want your input on a few questions (only 6 yes/no), which will help us understand your needs as well as interest as bargain hunters better !

Please find the form (only 6 questions) here. It will not even take a minute.

Thank you.

You mean like Yume. I guess the issue I have is that I'm not seeing any places getting rid of excess stock, more like just the same specials. Technology is there but it's more convincing restaurant/cafe owners to actually use it.

Happiest Hour, BLK Board, Melbourne Cheapskate

What would be cool is an app that pulls all the deals from Entertainment Book, specials, and Groupon/Scoopon/LivingSocial. OzBargain doesn't have geodata (yet) but that would be cool to integrate.

    • Hi Neil,

Thank you very much for your prompt suggestions.

I guess in trying to be concise, I kind of glossed over a couple of important points.

The main problem area that we are trying to target is food waste, be it in local groceries or restaurants. The central idea is to find consumers for this excess food.

A platform where local (small) grocers can push their clearance/expiring items directly to the consumer. It would also double up as advertising for them. Restaurants will be able to push their daily excess easily. We are envisioning it as a platform for fast moving items having short shelf life, which would otherwise be wasted. In that sense it is sort of similar to Yume, but we are targeting groceries as well.

A deal aggregator for the various deal websites available integrating geo-spatial data is an awesome idea, something we could may be think about down the line.

Thanks once again for your insight.

    • Hey Neil, thanks for sharing our website over at The Melbourne Cheapskate. Just wanted to give you a heads up, we recently re-branded and now go by CHUG. You can check out CHUG here.

I have been kicking around this idea for a couple of years. The issue that has stopped me is marketing. You need a critical mass of users to tempt the businesses, and a useful number of businesses to motivate users to install the app.
I have a few ideas on this from the business side, rather than the technical. PM me if you are interested in discussing.
