Cant see anything special here - a quick google and I found same unit at Clivepeters (admit no free shipping ) for $149

    http://www.clivepeeters.com.au/products/computers-technology…

are their different versions or units that reflect a different price?

    • +1

Yes there a three Different models and the one you put from Clivepeters is the middle one still 1080p but it does not have an Ethernet port and cant read off your servers and so on.

      • ah ha - thanks for the insight

  • +1

i have the model that is mentioned in the deal and love it to death so easy to use looks great and would recommend it to anyone. This is a good price as the free delivery.

You can get cheaper if you do what i did and that is go to office works and get them to price beat U Mart the cheapest i could find at(http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=WD+LIVE+TV&spos…) $165

There are a lot of office works around and they did price match for me so i got it for $156.75 but like i said if you don't live near one then its a great deal. :-)

  • Damn. This is a great price. I just bought mine last week for $179 and thought it was a bargain. The unit is great, all what I needed and for sure will suits many people. It's so easy to use and has such nice interface. Highly recommended.

  • I've got one of these too. Don't get mixed up with the cheaper WDTV models, the Live one is the most useful and $166 delivered (or price matched at Officeworks etc) is a great price.

  • Got this last weekend from JB for $165 after some intense haggling - so $166 delivered, haggle-free is a great price!

Great little unit, enjoying playing mkv's for the first time!

  • Does this unit has Wi-Fi build in?

    • No only an ethernet port.

    • No

    • I bought a D-Link Wifi USB for $35 for this unit, works perfectly

  • is it just a media player similar to this one :
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/21970
ASTONE AP-110D Full HD 1080p USB&Network Media Player ONLY $74.95

if so what is the point paying twice as much ?
i am just asking. my guess would be is that WD one does not have any glitches and a better quality. but i am just guessing so if aomeone could clarify on this i would appreciate it.
    ps voted positive.

    • Fair enough that you'd question this. I have the WDTV Live after using other media players in the past, and have found this unit to be much better. I believe it has better hardware inside that allows it to find and use files a lot faster, I've had media players that were terribly slow.
As of these "glitches" you speak of, I don't get any of that on my WDTV Live.
It's a great unit that does what it's meant to do, simple as that.

      • The WDTV is pretty much glitch free, and I've had nothing but trouble with previous boxes so that's a big selling point for me. I use mine as a jukebox to play music a lot of the time. With internet connection you can also use Flickr, Youtube and Pandora and stuff like that which at first seems not that useful but it's great to mess around with.

        • Can it play ABC iView etc.

          • @TheMatrix: Unfortunately not, but it can play YouTube, and even login to your YT account.

    • my 2cents…i have the astone ap-110d, it works well for everything i am throwing at it wirelessly (ie. after firmware upgrade)…my bro-in-law has the wd version and they are not very techie and are very happy with (although they are not wifi streaming)…so my current verdit is astone cheap, ok enough gui but needs a bit of techie elbow grease, wd version more user friendly but more expensive…

  • Awesome device, i have one of these hooked up via wireless network.

  • As tooten said, you can get it from officeworks for $156.75 using the price beat at officeworks.

Also beware that the Live has best features, though it doesn't play RMVB files, which I realised when I tried to use mine. Everything else, it's fantastic. Interesting enough, the WD Mini does play RMVB files…

Great deal nonetheless, as it's a terrific little player.

  • I'm a complete n00b at this sort of device- Accordign to the specs it steams youtube etc - does ABC's iView work on this or any of these devices?

    • It has a specific application for youtube, so I'm not sure if you could get ABC's iView running on the WDTV Live (I doubt it, but maybe)

      • Thanks for the info! =)

  • I hold a bias that favours Asus, so I'll point out that the comparable (and firmware improved) Asus O!Play R1 is on special for 23.75hrs at $99.95 + delivery ($18 to Sydney/Canberra.)

Comparison of the two here and reviews of O!Play here. Cheaper and equal or better depending on your needs and desires.

    • The asus doesn't play DTS files. so no deal for me. I have a lot of movies which have DTS audio.

  • At the risk of sounding like a complete doofus, does this do anything a PS3 can't?

    • instant mkv playback?

  • ps3 with playtv is pretty good. no argument there. Have both XBMC running on Xbox classic (lan as well as wifi), and WD Live TV via lan. The wife prefers the Xbmc interface to WDTV Live and Xbmc plays every format there is.
Waiting to see what the Boxee by D-link can do.
WD TV Live might get even cheaper when the D-link comes out because it can do streaming and has wifi 802.11n built in plus a XBMC like interface

  • Got this from OW North Ryde NSW for $157.70 after price matching + 5% off … but have unpleasant experience as OW staff argue they have to call DSE (this is at 7.30PM), I explained this is an online offer with free delivery but they keep standing by this stupid decision.

I called the manager and he just told the staff to check if its still available online. After that, all good :)

  • super_jq - glad you could get this through OW, local outlet refused to price match any online offer…

  • I just bought this TV LIVE last week for 170 from OW price matching. I am loving every moment of it. Really very nifty piece of device. I have used Astone 110D but this it really 1000 times better (Picture quality, HDMI compatibility, remote control, and interface).
In simple English – If you can afford 166 bucks then go for it rather than opting for cheap alternatives and swearing on every remote stroke.

  • Bought one yesterday from OW in Artarmon (Sydney) for $157.70. No problems price matching - they checked the DSE website and OKed it on the spot. Many thanks!

  • I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole! I bought one and ended up returning it cause the firmware is utter crap.
Keeps disconnecting from ur network every 3-4 minutes.
Check out WDs support forum, very common problem with the units.

    • irishjoe, those problems are specifically when using external wireless adaptors - no plans for wireless here. Regardless, I am planning to run the B-Rad firmware (to enable >2 usb drives, amongst other things)

  • Interestingly, I did end up getting a wi-fi adaptor, and absolutely no problems at all. There is also now a pre-release official firmware which allegedly fixes many of the identified issues and provides some new features
