    Great price.
    They are usually $25/kg.

    • -1

It's pistachio and not cashew which goes around $20+ a kilo

      • +1

if you like at the '(was $16.98)' part of the post, cashews are $22.64 per kg.

The last bag I got from Coles were stale. Label said 'imported product'.

Took em back and asked Coles staff from where were they imported. Nobody there knew.

    • -3

      Most likely from India.

      • You should work for Coles.

Be very wary of imported agricultural products - laws in many nations arent as stringent as in Australia - there have been cases where ablution block sewerage is used as to fertilise crops

      • +2

Sewerage as fertiliser is common in China. Same in Vietnam? Should not be used on the big farms that export, but I still be wary of uncooked food from Asia. The locals know to cook them.

e.g. frozen berries - fine if you cook them.

I'd have though roasted nuts should be plenty safe enough.

        • +2

Problems is chemicals are often used to aid break down of human waste and gets into the eco system of the ag farms

      • +3

Why are people negging aboabo….he's got a fair point. Many products from overseas especially China, vietnam, India and other Asian countries have dubious quality issues. I only buy food from Australia or new Zealand.

        • I buy Aussie fruits but sometimes even they are stale or rotten. Don't know what to say.

Even though Asian countries have the longest life expectancy for both male and female and Australia has the 3rd highest rate for cancer after France and Denmark :/

        • @Alienzzz: Thats becos of red meat consumption.

      • It also depends on how much those rules are followed even if they were stringent though. Like as we know, some rules can be very stringent but not everyone follows them, so they are more on books.

    • +3

      Usually they're from Vietnam.

Well i didnt want to name and shame but yeh

    • +5

Took em back and asked Coles staff from where were they imported. Nobody there knew.

Well what did you expect? The team members on the floor are just to display products and sell. It's not like they know would know where their products are sourced.

You would need to contact head office for that information, and even then, they might not be able to tell you on the spot.

    • Vietnam

    • +1

Biggest exporter of cashews in the world is Vietnam. And in case anyone asks, pistachios Iran. I would be surprised if any Australian farms grow cashews

      • As above, but combined. India also a major exporter. Main reason is not climate related, but because of the need for cheap labour to process. Much extraction from pulp surrounding the nut is done by hand and that's related to the presence of a caustic oil in the shell. I read a long time ago that a number of workers went blind every year performing the job. Hopefully that situation has improved dramatically.

An episode of Landline a couple of years ago indicated a few farmers growing some cashews here for niche, but that they were then being sent overseas for processing.

  • -1

Hard to believe the checkout operators don't know their products and origins

    • +30

Not really….why would a 16 year old kid give a crap about where your cashews come from?

They hate the job and are only doing it to buy clothes/gadgets/alcohol & drugs for the weekend

        • +5

        • +4

          @pointless comment:
Actually cigarettes are the only thing they give a stuff about in security. I worked for a large chain in the mid 90's….you could give away heaps of free stuff to customers eg they buy 10 packs of tuna….just charge them for 1. Want a free pie or pizza….just pick one on your way to the lunch room and tell security that you will pay for it later….maybe even next week when u get paid…..but never…ever…ever try to steal ciggies or booze…makes the security look bad…they stocktake the ciggies and booze REAL strict..
And that was 1994….Marlboro USA was only $4 a pack….Benson and Hedge's $3.80…Winfield $3.70……and we thought that was a ripoff compared tonprices in the 80's

Are any of these product of australia?
All the Coles ones say mix of imported and local (which begs question why there is none which has 100% locally produced ones).

    • +6

Likely says "mix of local and imported ingredients"

In the case of cashews that means SE asian cashews and local salt

cleverly worded for not so clever consumers!

      • +1

It actually says Packed in Australia from imported and local ingredients. pic here https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/77537/38390/img_201604…
        Ingredients being:
96% Cashew Nuts, Sunflower Oil, Salt.

I'm sure it's the Salt &/or Oil that is Australian and that's it.

        • Yes,Woolies has changed its wording.Because some Ozbargainers and I bought it before, say 1 year ago,we remember what was originally written on the package.

        • +1

          @Neoika:
yeah, I know it changed just reporting back what it says now.

Also the catalogue clearly mentions it as a Product of Vietnam, but nowhere on the pack or in store can that info be found, quite strange really…

        • @nismo: I still have one pack at home from last year and just find the Ingredients are 97% Cashews and Sunflower Oil,no Salt.So the new version has got Salt in it,which makes the percentage of Cashews shrink by 1%.

        • @Neoika:
Actually I bought the Roasted & Salted (it will be used for cooking) perhaps you have the unsalted one?

I just checked and next to the Sea Salt it says (1%).

    • +3

If **imported* is written first, the majority of the content is imported. The Aussie content might be a bit more salt, or air in the packet.

  • -2

I find the coles ones taste better

  • Good price but they are not on sale. I think it is everyday price as there is no "Save $xx" on the label which they usually do if its a sale price.

    • +4

They are DEFINITELY on sale. I think they are usually about $15

      • +1

I agree with starionx…. I have been waiting for it to be on sale for a couple of weeks!

    • +3

They are usually $16.98. These cashews are imported from either India or Vietnam

    • +1

Or just put them down your pants if you're going to steal.

        • +1

Go somewhere else then. I hear local shops or farmers markets are nice. Quit justifying stealing.

Moreover please be clear why you steal? You love farmers or you hate customer service at your Colesworth? Could it be that you have a chronic habit of taking what does not belong to you with no regard for others?

        • -4

          @spy:
Awwww are you a bit but hurt?
Not stealing.. Paying the same percentage they give farmers of their rightful income.
I also don't appreciate the reduction in customer service the systematic job losses these self serve checkouts have caused.

        • +1

@jimbobaus: Lack of technological developments is what you prefer?

        • +2

@jimbobaus: Your Taking a product without paying for its price tag, that is stealing. You paying what you think is a "fair" amount doesn't justify what you do.

    • +6

This is blatant lies and cheating. As an ex-manager at Woolworths, I can assure you other honest customers end up paying for your dishonesty eventually. Hardly cool of you.
Moreover, it astounds me that you demonstrate no guilt in your actions and furthermore provide invalid justification which has criminal connotations. Most tragically, you seem to live by the hook or crook principle, and that there shall be no consequences for your moral misconduct….little do you know…. #Hereafter #Reckoning

      • -3

        Diddums!
No.. its the farmers who pay in the long run.
If Coles/Woolies paid farmers fairly for their produce… maybe i would feel some guilt.. but sadly they do not so nor do i.

        Seems i am not alone….

        • +2

I am touched by your compassion towards them oppressed farmers. How fortunate they are to have you stand up for their rights! Presuming the proceeds of your crime are forwarded to them then, eh Mr Robinhood?

There are other avenues to support the farmers, and yours is the most pathetic of them if that is indeed what it is.

And of course if others do it, I can do it too, legit, eh jimbob?

I am amazed at the eroding moral compass in people today. A general and simple "if you gave something to hide, there must be something wrong" principle no longer has any meaning. The very tenets of our functional society are being breached and we are seeing the gradual erosion of moral/social values and goodness to the extent that people have the gall to justify blatant stealing with the most pathetic of justifications.

Why sudden concern whether an item on sale is made in Australia?

I would think 95% or more of the bargains listed on this site were NOT made in Australia either, but i don't hear any complaints on other bargains…

    • +6

There is some agreement, but surely when it comes to fresh produce, there are several reasons to prefer "local" (meaning Australian) 🇦🇺

      • Quality
      • Freshness
      • Hygiene standards
        In addition to:
      • Supporting local businesses & jobs.
        Etc
      • Agreed, but you get what you pay for. Want local - go to the local health/co-op shop or farmers markets :)
        BTW I upvoted you.

        • I think you replied to the wrong person?

        • @nismo: nope I didn't. :)

        • @spy:
So the part where you said "BTW I upvoted you", were you talking to lordezekiel? because you up voted them not me. Which, in addition to your message, none of it looks like a response to what I said.

I made no reference to cost or any specific place to shop (or not shop) for local produce . Nothing you wrote is related to anything I said, sorry.

I've found that these are part of the fruit and veg. Woolies currently has the $1 Woolworths dollar per $10 spend on fruits and veg. So spend extra $0.50 on fruits and get $1 Woolworth dollar.

    • I got $1 Woolworths dollar this week and wonder where it came from… now it all makes sense!
