Need Advice about Buying Second Hand Car

I live in sydney and am after a prius i tech.

There isnt that many cars of the model and year I am after(2009-2010).

Anyway I found a used car dealer in hobart who has that car and hes offered me nearly the price I wanted.

Its on gumtree and he has a provider number.

I have had multiple phone conversations and hes sent me alot of photos.

He has a website and everything and hes quite old (I can tell by his voice and difficulty sending emails).

Anyway my plan is to drive my car (which is old) and meet him in melbourne and exchange cars, only I have to pay the deposit first.

But thats not until tomorrow as he has to talk to the freight person to get the car over the bass strait on monday.

The situation feels safe but because I have never met him etc I am slightly worried.

Any advice, suggestions you can think of?

  • I once was asked by a private seller to give a deposit for a car that I had inspected for him to 'keep it' for me until I did a REVS check. That was many years ago when smartphones weren't around and I had to go home to use the internet. I refused knowing that it had been on the market for several weeks already. Later - found out that it was a repairable write off -worth probably half what the guy was asking for.

  • If You haven't already committed to this car (which in my opinion would be a bad decision) Pickles Auction in Belmore Sydney does have a Prius Itech.

I have purchased my Prius (non itech) from them two years ago for $15K when others that age were $20K +. Buying from Pickles was a positive experience, the only issues are you can't test drive or get an inspection done.

    • Thanks for this link, I will ring them in the morning.
I have trouble figuring out how to use their website so really do appricate it.
