SUV with full options for under 40k with Good Resale Value after 3yr

Next door neighbor is looking to buy a used 2014/2015 SUV for under $40k with max 20k on odometer, they want the following in a car

  1. Resale value after 3yrs
  2. Reliability

Few questions

  1. Is it better to buy from a dealer with warranty? Used car? If dealer what should they consider
    Or
Look for private sale? If private sale other than the mechanical checks what should they consider

  2. They are considering Mazda cx5 GT vs RAV4 cruiser, which one has better resale value?

  3. How much colour plays in resale value and again what colours are best for resale? White, silver, red?

They are mainly interested in sun roof, leather seats it doesn't have to be AWD
Thanks in advance

They are young couple no kids at this stage maybe in a yrs time.
They looking something along RAV4, CX5 given up on xtrail not interested in Tuson for some reason ;) I guess mid size SUV
They were initially going with RAV4 but another family member got looking into CX5
No off road normal city drive
They want sun roof and leather seats (easier to clean with young kids)

  • MX5 isn't an SUV.

    • Cheers mate it's CX5 all fixed up

  • Full Options != Good Resale Value

CX5 is a better choice however.

    • can you be bit more specific about CX5 what makes it better choice over RAV4?

      • RAV4 is often lease/fleet vehicle, which makes it's resale value lower. It is typical toyota e.g. not exciting, poor handling etc. Expected reliability and cost of service is better than competitors.

CX5 is more modern, noticeably better handling, more options, excellent diesel engine and more sophisticated transmission compared to rav4. Fuel consumption is also better across the range of engines.

Also strong IMHO, but I struggle to understand w-h-y people want SUV for No off road normal city drive. You are paying more for car with worth economy, handling and performance only because it is higher.

    Hyundai Tuscon

  • Buy a new one. I dont understand why people buy 2nd hand when they have $40k to blow.

Well as I've been advised by them, the brand new RAV4 cruiser with under 15k km is going for $36k similar miles for Mazda CX-5 GT $39k
The brand new ones are around $46k+

It makes sense to me about the second hand car with all the left over new car warranty.

Saving of around 7 to 8k

  • Colorado 7 LT looks like a good buy if you can get your hands on a new demo (seen them with only 100km on the clock) for $40,000.
There may be a few soon for end of fy sales.

  • Nissan Qashqai clearance models are starting from 26K driveaway and Xtrail starting from 29K
I am not sure how do they perform but might be worth looking at. I drive the 2004 Nissan Skyline V35 and recently bought 2006 Xtrail. Nissan has been good to me…so far so good.

    • will Nissan have a good resale value?

      • yes.

  • toyota kluger

At the end of the day colour doesn't make a lot of difference to resale IMO. Unless you get a dodgy everyone hates colour. There is a reason however fleet sales prefer white and silver cars.

private sale will save money and a near new car will still be under factory warranty as long as the services have been done, so why bother with a dealer.

As for Mazda or Toyota they probably don't have much difference in resale value after 3 years, both good reliable makes. Max 20k might be hard to come by, not many turning their cars over after such a short time, more likely would be 40k after 2years.

There is quite a few suggestions for SUV there. How many seats do they want, how big, any towing ability? There is a significant difference between a RAV4 (mid size SUV) kluger (big SUV) or Colorado 7 (big off road 4wd built on a ute chassis)

      • Fair enough. Either or which then. Both have reputation for reliability and therefore good resale to go with it.

Pick the one you like more out of those two. Use any method you like. Looks, colour, features, handling, power, whatever. If you like it more you will look after it better which will keep the resale higher.
