  • How come it costs more to fly to South America than the US? The distance should be shorter?

    • +6

I would say less competition. When Aerolineas Argentinas pulled out a couple of years ago it left LAN/Qantas who codeshare as generally a monopoly and the only way for us to visit family there unless you wanted to fly to LAX and then back down to South America. AIR NZ returning is a good thing in terms of competition.

Remember to the US you have QF, Delta, Virgin and United who all fly direct or you could go via Fiji, NZ, Honolulu or Asia which keeps them all honest.

    • +1

Because distance isn't the only thing that determines the cost.

  • +1

Wonder how severe the threat of the zika virus is…

    • As long as you don't visit places with open air sewage systems it should be ok. There is a reason why the majority of the affected people live in the slums (favelas) or in very poor areas where higyne is luxury.

      • Yeah, it's not like mosquito can fly to other areas or anything. Oh, wait.

        • Nah, the pollution around the concrete jungles (city capitals) with lots of old buses releasing tons of CO2 in the air together with the million of cars in the traffic jams would certainly kill them.

  • Anyone here been to Brazil? Interested to hear recommendations of things to see and do.

    • +3

My recommendation is to go somewhere else. :)

    • +4

I went there last year for 4 months when they has similar prices and loved it.
Loads of things to do all over the place, from floating down the amazon to the beaches of rio.
They have amazing nightlife, great people and loads of wildlife. well reccommended

    • Risk vs reward ;)

      • I'm all for people having freedom to travel wherever they want. What bugs me is the tax payers money that gets wasted helping idiots that travel to dangerous places, then expect the embassies to fix the consequences of their choices.

Traveling to anyplace not recommended by Smart Traveler should immediately wave your rights to consular assistance and Medicare coverage on return.

EDIT: Besides legitimate reasons, eg. visiting family members.

  • of course it's only cheap to fly there during winter. at least it's still warm, last year in June/July when I went it was about 28-31 most days.

  • What gets me is that if you look on the smart traveller website they say to exercise normal safety precautions in the UK yet there have been numerous bombings and terrorist attacks. Yet in coastal areas of Sabah in Malaysia they say you should reconsider your need to travel. There was only one major kidnapping incident there in 2000 and a couple of smaller ones in 2013/15. The area is patrolled by the Malaysian Navy and is only considered dangerous on wikitravel for those who are diving alone. I went there in 2010 with local knowledge. I didn't bother to check smart traveller. Does smart traveller give advice of places to avoid in Australia? Is Sipadan more dangerous than Cabramatta?

    • +1

Your comment about Cabramatta is just plain ignorant…

      • +1

Maybe your right. I don't live there. Ok, Bourke in NSW or the Gold Coast. These are "allegedly" dangerous.

        • +1

          Dude,

The first thing u do when you dig a hole for urself is to stop digging.

The intelligence agencies that decide these recommendations have more information than you do. Doesn't make them right or wrong, but they are assessing risk for the benefit of Australians, that you can choose to ignore. Often places are classified as more of a risk than they really are for most tourists, but there may be intelligence about e.g. a terrorist cell operating in the area. Doesn't mean it will affect you, but the if risk exists, it is right that the Australian people be warned of it. They can't go into specifics so they have the green/yellow/orange/red coding system.

      • It's interesting also that different sources provide different information. For example when I went to Sipadan in Borneo I was told that in the year 2000 some people were kidnapped by Muslim rebels from the Philippines and beheaded. They said the navy now patrols the area so it's safe. I just googled it today and the article said 20 people were kidnapped and all were released unharmed. In contradiction to the beheading story I was told. But seriously it seems like the incidents are few and far between and you would be far more likely to die in a car crash.

        • Sometimes the intelligence agencies that make recommendations like those on Smartraveller have to rely on open source or word-of-mouth information, which is often incorrect or inaccurate as you suggested. You're definitely right that the risk that harm might come to you would likely be higher doing something mundane like driving or crossing the road; even so, travelling to a high risk country includes both traffic risks (often higher than in Australia) in addition to the other dangers of being in an unstable area. It's up to the person as to whether that level of risk is worth the benefit of being in the country at that time - any destination is always better without large crowds of tourists to spoil it!

      • Why doesn't smart traveller warn people about the Gold Coast?

        http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2011-07-21/gold-coast-becoming…

        • +1

Because it's for helping Australian's out with consular assistance, whilst overseas, where Medicare and Australian law do not apply.
