  • I'm trying to decide between this deal and your other current deal with Jamocha and Brazil black diamond. For a super creamy, aromatic, milk-based coffee, which do you think is better? I found some of the African beans of past deals to be a little too "fruity" tasting for my liking. Colombian beans have been generally the most enjoyable. Are other central/south American beans generally similar in flavour or a lot of variety?

    Cheers.

    • +2

Yes the Colombians and Brazilians would be a fairly safe bet for milk based coffees. The Brazilians tend to be quite malty and chocolatey often with a good body and slightly lower acidity making them favoured for espresso also.

Colombian coffees are routinely listed among the top three coffee-producing countries in the world. The classic Colombian profile—as with other better-quality coffees from Peru, etc brings together a good acidity and a strong caramel sweetness, perhaps with a nutty undertone. Sweet and medium-bodied.

The Kenyans and Ethiopians tend to be quite aromatic and have more fruity, floral and citrus flavours. Often roasted light/light medium to highlight.

Also you'll find that natural processed coffees tend to have more fruity sweetness where as the washed coffees often more crisper cleaner profiles.

thanks for that thoughtful reply. I'll purchase shortly.

  • What would you recommend for butter style coffee (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulletproof_Coffee).
The buzz is all about single origin but not sure if it would suite a milk or black coffee.

    Cheers

    • +5

I can answer this as I've been getting Manna beans for the last 4 years specifically for this.
      (MY TIME TO SHINE! lol)

As long as it's high altitude, single origin and fully washed you'll be good.
I have a high preference for S. American coffee (I have a preference for S. American coffees on the whole and I usually have it black,) but have used it with African coffees from Simon.

He'll definitely be able to help out out with the above beans.

      • Haha, Thanks Andy, I thought of you when I saw the question. @Elite, Grunge is definitely the expert in this area. I believe that the high Altitude coffees like South Americans are preferable due to the lower oxygen levels when growing preventing pathogens or bacteria growing on the coffee. Washed processing resulting in crisp clean coffees.

That being said most specialty coffees these days are to a sufficient standard. It's mainly the low grade and low altitude coffees where this can become more of a problem. Often these are the coffees used for making instant coffee etc.

@Elite79 If you leave a note in Paypal regarding this then I'll make sure I send something nice that is suitable for you :-)

        • Thanks.

So which do i order ? I presume the $59.95 deal and add the comment of "for butter coffee" to the paypal details?

          Thanks in advance

        • @elite79: Sorry Elite, yes that works great, thanks :-)

      • By the way i should have said thanks for the help yesterday.

On a side note, do you use MCT oil with it or just straight butter coffee and also what butter do you use (as i can't seem to find paris creek in my small country town).

        • No I don't use mct currently, altho' I have.

You can get them online and there's a few ebay suppliers. Start with a teaspoon and work your way up otherwise… uuuhh… WEAR BROWN PANTS.

As for butter, any NZ made butter will do as they do grass fed unless there's a drought.
I've used wesgold, but am now using Woolies home brand, as they are made in NZ.

  • When you say "fresh roasted" does that mean that when I place an order(like on this day 5/4/16 for instance) that it's roasted the day the order is sent out or does it arrive with a roasting date on the pack[s]?

Two weeks is usually the cut off point isn't it from roasting to discarding as no longer fresh or to be regarded as such?

I ask, only because some mail order bean suppliers are prepared to be a little bit elastic with their use of the term 'Fresh roasted' and I've ended up with beans of an indeterminate age.

    • Hey Luc, nor problem. Yes all coffee is roasted within 1-2 days of order and shipped express. This means that sometimes it can be a bit too fresh and need a couple of days to degas before at it's best.

Sometimes if it's a deal like this 4 x 480g and we have a a coffee that has had about 5 days to degas already we might include just 1 bag and mark it drink first :-)

I would say 2 weeks is a bit too hasty. It depends on the coffee and roast style but they will still usually perform extremely well at 3 weeks.

      • I should of added I've been a customer of yours for 3 years already and get a monthly kg and wouldn't you know it…I ran out today and another couple of days yet before this months supply arrives.:-( :d

anyone reading this should try Manna's beans and then open a 'fresh' packet of supermarket beans and watch the setting go down on your grinder to levels you don't normally need and the taste…..yuck.
You've been warned. Buy these beans and your ruined for life…no more will you ever be able to drink rubbish beans because you'll know the difference.

        • Thanks Luc, yes I know :-) I appreciate your support over the last few years. It's fantastic to see people enjoying the coffees and ordering regularly from us.

Very kind of you to pass on the feedback and recommendation. If you're ever up in Brisbane pop into our roastery for a coffee. It's always nice to meet our online customers and put a face to a name :-) Hope you have a great week!

  • Perfect timing! Just ordered the Medium Dark batch, but I missed the bit to add a message. Any chance I can get a Brazilian as the Lucky Dip option? ;)
    Thanks Simon.

    • I will certainly do my best for you. Please shoot me an email so I can match the Ozbargain name against your order :-)

      • Just received with black diamond included. Great work as usual Simon.

  • What would you recommend for cappuccino? :)

    • Hey Jetship, this would be a great option for you :-)

      $59.95 deal includes the following:

Suits milk based and espresso. Medium/Medium Dark Roast
      1 x 480g Southern Mountains
      1 x 480g Jamocha
      1 x 480g Nicaragua Bastilla Naturals
      1 x 480g Lucky dip

      • I just ordered the 2 x 980g this morning, before you posted this one.

If you recommend this one for cappuccino (which I make for my wife a couple of times a day), am I too late to change my order?

        • Hey Chris, hope you're well mate! No problem I have amended your order for you :-) Going out express later today

        • Thanks, Simon.

The same as our last order, which went down a treat.

FWIW, my wife dislikes the Nicaragua Bastilla (I don't), so it's fascinating to see how people who have been working out their mutual likes and dislikes over the last 25+ years can differ in the strangest ways.

It just means emptying the hopper each time I grind :-)

        • +1

@ChrisLevo: Haha yes taste can be quite subjective. Congrats on 25 years +. Great to hear in this day and age :-)
Happy to swap out the Nicaragua for an alternative that perhaps you will both enjoy!?

        • @mannabeans:
          Simon - you are a marvel :-)

          Why not?

You know what we like (Jamocha and Southern Mountains among them), so trust your judgement - and many thanks.

BTW, I still love my Expobar Leva!

        • @ChrisLevo: Great machines. Thanks Chris, I'll make the change!

        • @mannabeans: holy moley thats a 2 grand coffee machine, does it do anything better than say breville's oracle?

        • +1

          @furythree:
It does, for me, but it's all subjective.

I have taken 10 years to go from a $100 machine and supermarket beans to what I have now.

On the way, I have gradually traded up equipment (coffee machine, grinder, tamper, etc.) as I understood what I was doing, have become a regular customer of a roaster who sells quality beans (and is flexible and understanding) and did a couple of short barista courses.

I also frequent a couple of coffee forums, and now have a group of mates who think like I do, so it can become a bit of a passion.

I am now in my mid 60s, make pretty damned good coffee without spending too much, and know that my coffee machine will outlast any cheap, plastic-filled Chinese machine.

I toyed with a roaster, but cannot tell the difference between just-roasted coffee and that roasted a few weeks away and kept in the vented bag, so will stay a customer of Mannabeans as long as they hang around.

My retirement plan is to stop buying these Mannabean specials, and buy their single origin stuff, instead :-)

However, as I said, it's all subjective, and I would be the last person to say that you could not prefer what you can make with an Oracle (using the same beans), 'cos we all have different tastes.

          Whatever, keep buying these beans!

        • @ChrisLevo: i completely get what youre saying. but im just asking objectively what the 2k machine is expected to do besides the other 1.2k machine

both are top of the line, im just wondering what $800 gets me

        • @furythree:
          Again, it's all subjective.

However, if nothing else, I do know that my machine will still be going when they cart me off to the Maximum Security Twilight Home :-)

These things are bullet-proof (and I'm talking about their direct competition, as well), and my experience, and that of friends, is that the cheaper ones are not.

You also get an E61 group head, so can play with things like bottomless portafilters, which I do from time to time to ensure that my grinding and tamping don't cause channelling.

10 seconds to heat, stretch and texture the milk for my wife's cappuccino from that manic 3-hole cool touch steam wand blows my mates away!

That huge group head just lets me pull shot after shot after shot at the same temperature when the house gets crowded with coffee drinkers.

          And it looks great!

And, it's all subjective, and they all need Manna Beans.

        • @ChrisLevo: see thats really objective features that make a clear difference

what is an e61 group head? do you mean one of the filters that dont have a spout to direct the drip? ive seen commercial units use one where the coffee just directly out of the filter into the cup. looks amazing

10 seconds end to end from heating to foam ready? thats insane….

          What grinder do you use?

Thanks for this. I might seriously consider one

        • @furythree: @ChrisLevo, thanks Chris very kind and good info on the Leva. I have to agree with you mate the Expobar machines from experience seem to be extremely reliable and the E61 group head is a definite plus.

@FuryThree, this is a common grouphead size that is compatible across a large number of commercial machines and makes life a bit easier when buying additional group heads or baskets etc. An example of this would be the naked group head you were describing that showcases the extraction better and is visually appealing. Also the VST baskets are a good addition and are machined to provide more precise holes and claiming an improved extraction :-)

        • @mannabeans: oh man, im resisting every urge to buy another coffee machine right now!

        • @furythree:
I'm sure that Simon will give you a good price.

A single group Nuova Simonelli would take pride of place in any kitchen :-)

  • +1

ordered pack 1 thanks perfect timing as always

  • Hi - how long can you keep these beans for and are you meant to store them in the freezer until use?

    • 3-6 WEEKS IN A COOL DRY PLACE IS OK.

I buy the 4x 480g bags and open 1 at a time and the last bag opened is fine.

Never keep coffee in the freezer I was told.

      Cheers.

  • +1

Just arrived, with a great selection.

    Love your work, Simon :-)

  • Hi, if I was to place an order of the 4x could I make a request to not receive the Nicaragua Bastilla as the "lucky dip"? I'm still working through a bag of that from our last order because my fiance doesn't like it at all!

    • No problem :-) Please leave a note in Paypal. Thanks

      • +1

Wonderful! Will place an order imminently!

      • Hi Simon, any 980g bags of Brazilian beans coming up? Need 2.

  • Hi Simon, any chance of getting all 4 as Jamocha? :-) That stuff is awesome!

    • Hey Mossy thanks, no problem. Please leave notes in Paypal :-)

      • Sweet! Ordered, thanks man!

  • Hi Simon, I just tried to order but the deal is no longer available on your site. Is this expired?
