Washed My Car Key, Will It Be Ok?

Hi guys.

Just found out I accidentally washed my spare car key in the washing machine on a cold wash.

It's just a key for a 2000 Toyota Corolla. So no remote, just a key. It can central lock/unlock only if I put it in the driver's side door.

Will it be okay if I just put it in rice for a few days?

Thanks!

    Not sure if srs

  • Not trolling, I just wondered if I should wait a little longer before trying.

Yes, but it will still taste the same.

But seriously if it has no electronics, nothing is damaged, you just have a cleaner key.

Wait, so it has no electronics or battery in it? It's just a key (lump of metal and plastic)?

If so, it's fine. Why would getting it wet be a problem??

Edit: Just to be really clear, if it "central locks" when you put the key in the driver's door and twist then the central locking electronics are all in the car, not in the key. The key acts like a normal old key, but the car has a sensor in the door that says "if this door unlocks mechanically via a key, then trigger the electronic lock on all other doors".

but the car has a sensor in the door…

Incorrect, technically speaking…it's actually a little man who yells PULL to the other three little men in the other doors…just FYI.

Sorry, it was a typo. I mean to write

but the car has a senior in the door…

As you said, a little man (specifically it's a little old man).

          Damn auto-correction! ;)

  • I just wasn't sure. Thanks for the explanation :)

Thank you for sharing this experience.

I love reading problems like this.

  • Well it probably has a transponder in it. But I don't think it will be broken because it's pretty sealed up inside

  • To be on the safe side check the key around the plastic/metal joins, soap might have been caught under plastic and could cause corrosion if the key was not quality steel (unlikely). If you don;t see any rust or corrosion after a week or two no sweat.

  • Will it be okay if I just put it in rice for a few days?

Since it's a Japanese car, you'll want to wrap that rice in nori, but otherwise should be fine…
