  • Can anyone of the torch connoisseurs comment on this one? I want something decent that I can plug into the wall and leave plugged in all the time. I always forget to recharge my torches.

Well… I was going to stay out of this, having commented in enough of these posts, but since you asked…

If you want something simple, stick with torches that take AAs. Grab some NiMH batteries and keep a couple spare, charged. They're pretty cheap at Aldi, or you can pick up some Eneloops if you can find a DSE that has them cheap. Plenty of power, very safe, very easy to handle. You can find torches that use the same Cree XM-L/XM-L2 LEDs that take AA batteries.

Li-ion tends to have significant startup costs cause you're immediately investing some $15-$20 in a decent charger and another $8 just for a pair of cells that won't blow up in your face (possibly literally). But if you want to get into it then they do tend to have higher peak performance and longer runtimes than AA NiMH.

"2000lm" is highly unlikely. The fairly popular Cree XM-L and XM-L2 only get some 1000lm (+/- 100) in the cheaper T6 bin, and that's driving them at 3A, the max (forward voltage ~3.35V according to specs, ~10W) (read: it's gonna get very, very hot). That's still plenty bright.

The cheap 18650 cells, I'd trust about as far as I could throw them. You'd be looking at a minimum of some $7-$8 for a pair of decent (Samsung, LG, Sanyo, Panasonic) cells from a reputable supplier. Cheap ones tend to not hold much charge, and have some risk of overheating/venting. In a sealed tube like this waterproof torch, venting = pressure = potential explosion.

I can't tell if this takes two cells at once. If it does, then you'd also want protected cells to prevent an uneven charge from causing issues of the heat/explosion nature. Single-cell torches are safer.

The charger… it's possible to have decent chargers for cheap (and apparently they've been seen and tested in the $2 range, retail price). But it's also possible to have chargers that don't terminate properly and overcharge the cells, which again is a overheating/venting risk - and that can happen some time after the actual charge, too. Personally, I'd prefer to get a more reputable charger, since it's really hard to tell if these unknown ones are the good cheap type or the crap cheap type. Especially if you plan to leave it plugged in.

      • @elusive Thanks for the info man!!

      • Open old laptop battery and there will be pack of 18650 cells generally. Capacity might be exhausted but as free stuff they are still pretty good.

  • What LED is it?

    • -1

      T6

      • +2

"T6" is a bin (aka quality) used by Cree for certain parts they produce. Which actual part is this?

    • This one on amazon uses the same picture and says it's an xm-l.. but who knows
      http://www.amazon.com/MicroMall-2000lm-3-Mode-Waterproof-Fla…

If it is an xml it should only be capable of outputting 1000lm according to Cree

  • +2

I very much doubt the 2000lm output

    • -5

Ideal state could achieve that lighting effects

      • +9

stop your bullcrap OP. 2000lm is outside the technical specifications, how on earth do you expect it to happen?

      • +3

I'd like to see it happen, these typically would have 400-700lm.

        • +2

T6 is usually 900-1000 lumens with an 18650 and approx 3A draw

      • Care to validate/prove your claim ?

  • How much is it normally?

    • US $15.06, AU price i forget.

      • +1

        Unbelievable…

  • +2

Non-thermal radiation. Lol. Almost as funny as the 2000lm.

  • Are these batteries still able to be imported here? There are new regulations in effects from this month…

  • HAHAHA 2000lm… good one…

  • +2

    Equivalent to 4 trillion glowworms

  • I'd pay real money to NOT have the stupid light modes (eg flashing etc..)
Can't I just get a freaking torch with on and off!!

    • +3

what if you are out camping with girls and feel the need for a disco, got ur iphone music ready but no strobing lights, no action tonight for you.

      • +1

For no action you'd need a fleshlight.

    • They have one, however I think some lesser modes might be handy in this case.

  • Nice deal, been a while since the last Led post. Bought one

    • +1

      thanks.
