I did a check, it's not as cheap as a velocity rewards booking
I did Per-Mel 08JUL2016 one way and selected a seat up front $197
Using Velocity points it was around 30,000 points
A reward booking on virgin would cost you roughly 16900 points + around $30.
But it gives you another option if you have points to spare.
Hopefully in the future they will have tiger reward flights
It doesn't seem you get a great conversion rate - your example is only 0.65c per point, compared to about 1-1.5c on domestic Virgin economy. I checked MEL-ADL and it was around the same conversion. Having said that it was still fewer points on Tiger (8500) than Virgin (10600), but I never buy checked baggage or select a seat.
Your example is a bit misleading as well because you used points + pay, so obviously the points total is much lower on Virgin.
