I've recently put something together very similar to this, using Kogans bargain price on cpu and cheap ddr4 from shopping express. Then a normal price z170A m3 gaming board from casegear mine still worked out a bit cheaper.

    • +2

Long live the cheap shopping express ram deals! There's just something so satisfying about buying ram for a good price.

      • +2

Not if it has ugly green PCB.
        Aesthetics, please.

      • Newegg wins with ram prices for me. I grabbed 32gb of G.skill Ripjaws V 3200 for $275 AUD delivered. Same ram at PCCG was $399 plus post. Shopping express had nothing of that calibre at the time.

    • +2

I'd have to be saving a lot to buy a motherboard without local warranty .

      • +1

You must be prone to losing mobo's if youre worried about a warranty on a mobo. Ive been building for 17 years and never had a defective one.

        • +2

17 years, and you somehow managed to avoid the exploding capacitor debacle?

        • @ryang: It seems so, never had an issue with either Gigabyte nor Asus Mobo's during that period. Although I got bitten over the V3000 Compaq overheating/de-soldering circa 2006 GPU defect!

  • Do the K series have a CPU fan or is it BYO?

    • +6

Does not come with heat sink. BYO

      • +2

Wow that's crazy, they don't come with a heat sink, I had no idea. Some serious stuff. Thanks for the heads up, been dreaming of piecing together some highend gear someday.

        • +3

K series is for overclocking. Even if it comes with standard Intel heat sink, you would change it anyways.

        • +1

          @ykwon10:

Yup I do understand that part, but I assume not everyone overlooks right from the get go, could be a future planning thing. Also what if you stick a traditional heatsink on to a K series that isn't overclocked? usually have a heatsink laying around, the ones that come standard with a i3 and such. Thanks!

        • or get a cheapish air cooler for $25.

        • +3

Kind of pointless to pay extra for a K cpu if you'r not going to overclock.

    • +1

      K is BYO heatsink.

However most computer shops will sell you an intel one for 5-10 bucks if you aren't planning on overclocking as they usually have plenty of spares floating around. Or you could buy a cheapie heatsink from deepcool (I think that's the brand) for like 25 that is marginally better than the intel ones.

I personally bought the V8 cpu cooler from jw for 100 bucks.

      • Who not buy the corsair water cooler for slimier price(eg;h90)? Im assuming here water cooler will give you better result. Im using Corsair h100i with 4.8 i7 6700k and never gone above 70c under 45-60min gaming session.

        • The V8 looks way cooler :)

        • +3

@dogboy: Both are roughly double what you need to spend for an average user. Hyper 212X should set things right if you want longevity, low temperature and noise.

        • @ctg:

Don't understand why anyone would want noise, but to each his own.

        • @sabaramo: You knew what he meant.

On another note water cooling, for the most part, is a complete wank. A high performing air cooler will be cheaper, easier to install and perform as well if not better than an AIO water cooler (at the same noise level). An enthusiast, much less your average PC user, will likely never hit the thermal limits of air cooling.

        • +4

@d3ft: I think TomsHardware have done multiple cpu water vs air cooler tests and the Noctua-NHD14 (air cooler) always seems to come out on top. Myself, I went for the NZXT Kraken X61 Water Cooler as I like to overclock and live in a very humid climate.

        • @ctg: Definitely. Still, that V8 looks pretty damn cool.

        • +1

@d3ft: the downside with air cooling is if you don't have the clearance for a big heatsink directly above your CPU. Watercooling basically just moves it out of the way. But most people do it for visual reasons.

        • +1

          @dogboy:

Yep, that's what I got cooling my 6700k but I had to re install it as after me first attempt it was still getting over 80°C with just a mild OC (4.5 I think it was) when I stress tested it.

Now that I fixed my noobieness of putting to much paste it sits under 75°C @4.6 all day long

        • @johnno07:

Abso-freaking-lutely. I have a Noctua D14, its a beast (cooling my CPU for the past 3-4 years), but I'm going to switch to a H110i in a couple of months. It's blocked off 2x RAM slots, so I'm running 16Gigs of RAM (no it's not enough if you're running some hungry VMs and "full allocation of reserve memory").

Also, there just isn't enough clearance above my top/primary PCI-E slot.

        • Have a Haf X case and the V8 looks awesome.

Also 100 bucks is pretty cheap for the V8, also water cooling with those blocks isn't amazing performance against high end air cooling but it depends what you are doing. (Water cooling basically runs off air cooling anyway)

      • +1

If you aren't OC'ing you probably shouldn't even bother getting a K series processor.

        • +1

There's a mild increase in base freq (3.5 vs 3.3), but not as much between 6700 and 6700K (i7)

        • I usually don't overclock until later in the life cycle. My last processor the 8150 lasted me 5 years until I finally sold it.

        • @kasp:

It's the first thing I do. If I am paying for it I want to utilise it from the start. As long as you have adequate cooling you're pretty OK in my experience. :)

        • @Juddy:

Yeah I suppose, just I only really do it when I find a need and that's usually a few years down the track.

A couple of FPS doesn't bother me that much.

  • +3

Very competitively priced I would say. Recently built a similar setup using specials on Ozbargain, difference is minimal compared to this deal.

  • +7

I should have posted this the other day because this is exactly what I purchased. I static ice'd everything and this still came out ahead, added a Fractal Design R5 case and Cryorig H5 Universal cooler and I should be good to go soon!

    • I assume you also have a PSU and a HDD/SSD.

    • I have that case, make sure to get a couple of Noctua 14 fans as just the stock ones are not enough for summer time gaming unless you have the AC cranking in the room.

  • -1

Not to mention if you have issues they pay for your return post, great service ect.

    • Orly? New policy? That should get more mention.

      • +2

Yeah they have never paid for my return post… But generally get good service from PCCG.

      • You are entitled to a reimbursement of return shipping under Consumer Law from the retailer if the product is faulty.

        • Does this apply to Kogan? I got a 6600k from them and I am getting artifacting from the iGPU (integrated graphics)

When returning my Oneplus One to DWI for repairs I had to pay 16 dollars for shipping.

        • +1

Probably better to go through replacements with Intel directly instead of Kogan

        • @bentan77: Absolutely, always better to go directly to the manufacturer.

      • Thats what their ebay staff told me when I purchased a psu from them

  • +3

I made a Kogan/MSY mix computer but if this was about i would have gone it.

Also there is this http://www.asrock.com/news/events/AssassinsCreedwaveIII/inde… which should be available still as a bonus to the motherboard (but check first).

My Asus motherboard didn't come with any bonuses :(

    • thanks for this - had no idea
just picked up a new game today…

  • They also have a Xeon and i7 bundle, all pretty well priced.

  • -4

Shouldn't this be negged since the OP openly admits that this is the second best price?

    • That motherboard doesn't ship to Australia from Amazon.com, unfortunately.

  • +2

Good to hear of the kogan/shopping express mixed PC's people made! We're a family in this!

    • +1

Don't forget to add the SSD's on Amazon. Bank account isn't liking me this month :(

  • +4

Might be worth mentioning this pack as well

    https://www.pccasegear.com/products/35180/pccg-intel-i5-skyl…

  • I had the 6700k upon release non oc (yet), used hyper tx3 evo ($40 cpu cooler) and under normal usage, was getting around 60-70 degree Celsius (depending on ambient temp). Even on idle I never really saw my cpu go lower than 45 degs. According to Tom's hardware the cpu just naturally runs hotter and is built to handle higher temps. Under full load the temps still hovered around 70 degs. Apparently if it goes consistently over 85 degs then you should worry about upgrading coolers.

    • +3

Poor contact between heatsink and heat spreader maybe?

    • +2

Definitely shitty heat sink application. Running my 6600k at 4.5ghz with similar cooler and it won't get higher that 55 degrees

    • +1

yeah I would definitely look at your heatsink, good chance it's not making proper contact. Skylakes are more efficient and use less power than previous generations of intel CPUs which means they generate less heat. I'd think even a passive heatsink would perform better than the numbers you posted.

      • Despite the process shrinking, TDP has actually been going up since Ivy Bridge.

But yeah, something is up, my 6700k typically idles at ~30 degrees(26 right now), I do have a better cooler but my case is shoddy for air flow, so I reckon it cancels out.

      • Yep, I had too much paste on mine when I first installed it and it showed… once I re did the whole thing temps "dropped like it's hot"

  • -3

I currently use an Asrock mobo, but just beware, they aren't the greatest - trying to cram everything in was a bit of an issue for me - I tell you, the water cooling next to the damn GPU was a tight squeeze!

    • I suppose that depends on what board you got… I have their Extreme6+ and could not fault it other than some difficulty when IC'ing the RAM. But even then it was solved easily enough.

      • +1

That's all good man, actual advice that might be helpful to consider worded in the most discreet and polite way possible is negged to buggery here, so it's all good.

  • would this be any good for 4k editing with for example davinci resolve?

  • You'd want to get the 6700K for that as it has hyperthreading and then add a decent amount of ram… but tbh, you should really be looking at X99 instead of Skylake if your main goal is video editing.

    • Thanks for the advice on the x99. Am I likely to find one for a similar price point?

      • Not really… the processors are quite expensive with the cheapest being similarly priced to the 6700K and the most expensive being almost double that.

If you don't need it for work, 6700k will be plenty though

  • +1

I hope PC CASE GEAR make a cheaper non-k 6600 bundle with say a H750 board for those uninterested in overclocking

    • +1

      Second that. I'd be interested.
