i don't use Optus but i wonder if you can just use this to recharge an existing account like you can with some other networks?

This webpage for voice says 3GB and 28 days expiry on Prepaid Ultimate plan.

After the 30day expiry how long can this sim receive calls until its disconnected?
"Expiry If you do not recharge your service within the expiry period, your service will expire and you will be unable to use any remaining data allowance." doesn't mention disconnection though.

There is no longer a 30 day expiry on prepaid. If you're referring to the ultimate plan it only gives you 28 days, you've got 186 days before disconnection. The daily plus and long life have 30 days after expiry
they got rid of 30 days expiry plan?
They canned their monthly plus plan earlier this month
With all plans you get roughly 6 months of free outgoing emergency calls and free incoming calls and messages after your plan's expiry date.

$30 is included in this starter kit. You then select which voice or data plan you wish to go on.
One choice is 3gb data if activated before 1st may normally only 1.5gb plus unlimited calls plus unlimited texts. Same sim is available from optus online site at the moment as well.
Kmart Munno Para have half a dozen left. Staff were very helpful with the "one per customer" store limit, allowing me to buy one for me, one for the wife and one for the kid!
As of Thursday 28/5 $30 Optus SIM is still $10.
