Flashing Telstra firmware on Virgin Mobile Galaxy S7 Edge

Hey guys, quick question.

I want to get a phone from Virgin Mobile to use with my casual Telstra plan. It works out cheaper and better for me to get it this way. If I do this, am I able to download the Telstra firmware from SamMobile and flash it without issues on a Virgin Mobile S7 Edge? Or will I have performance issues? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

So why do you actually want to flash over the stock software?
It will work fine when you put your sim card in it. There's really no need.

    • I believe Telstra's firmware has a different csc setup. I just don't know if the Virgin setup is optimal for using the Telstra network

      • telstra firmware has telstra bloatware while virgins has their own bloatware.

other then that there the same

        • Ok thanks. So the CSC are not different in anyway which may affect performance?

          @snagseb:
          it wont affect the performance

        • @PVA:

          Thanks

@snagseb: nope i flashed my galaxy s6 edge last week to a different country's as i didn't want to wait for the latest update and it's fine.

        • @Axelstrife:

          Cool. Thanks mate

        • Actually Virgin don't put bloatware on their phones. Telstra, Vodaphone and Optus do, but (from personal experience, in my family we've had 6 separate phones from Virgin contracts) Virgin don't.

        • @deanylev:

Yep. All i had was the Optus app and boot logo. Uninstalled it and that was that.

        • @snagseb: Ah, you're right, they load Optus bloatware on Samsung devices, but not the Nexus or Sony devices I've had from them.

Incorrect. I'd recommend flashing to the telstra firmware tbh.

You miss out on VOLTE with the stock and optus firmwares.

        • @cheesecactus:

Damn. I missed that. Flashing the official Telstra firmware via ODIN wouldn't trip KNOX would it?

        • @snagseb:

Afaik no it wont. But dont trust me on that!

Also, damn, getting negged for posting a fact :/

        • @cheesecactus:

Cool, thanks. Haha yeah I got negged for giving my opinion also.

  • If you really want to, in theory all you need to do is flash the CSC to the correct one (will wipe data). The hardware is otherwise identical.

Don't know if it'll trigger the KNOX fuse, though.

    • Thanks. That's my primary concern. I believe you are right. I am thinking even if i flash the Telstra firmware via odin it shouldn't trip knox as i am not rooting the phone but yeah i am not sure.

There's just no need to do this.

I had a virgin Nexus 6p and apart from a virgin app being on the phone on initial start, there was no other bloatware. Telstra seem to like bloatware so if you flash that, you may gain a special Telstra start up screen (like the terrible Optus one) or other bloat.

    • Thanks mate. My main concern was the modem drivers. But others have reported no issues with that so I'll grab one shortly.

Yep, modem is the same set up on all Aus delivered S7 models.

    • In my family we have two Nexus 6Ps from Virgin, and it's impossible you had the app. Nexus's firmware is not to be modified by carriers in any way, just like an iPhone. There's one set of firmware for the 6P, no carrier-branded versions.

Sure. But what does that have to do with my Galaxy S7 Edge? :P. I had the optus app installed by default.

        • I was replying to Alister, not your post…

        • @deanylev: My bad. Sorry.

          @deanylev:

Thanks mate. I wasn't sure as I didn't have my Nexus 6p for long before I went with a Note 5.

  • Just got it :)
