  I purchased one of these kits last year and the quality is poor. Within a week, the detent ball fell out of the ratchet and the screwdriver tips deformed. You get what you pay for! I've since purchased they Repco brand kit which was dearer but 10x better.

  Can anyone tell me how to rate a socket set. I assume it's the quality of steel but how does the system 'measure' quality.
  I am thinking of getting a set as a gift for 17 year old and I'm willing to wait for 30% off a good set instead of buying cheap and nasty.
  Just to clarify, I assume sidcrome are best kinchrome down a notch but now do I know about others?

    If you pick up the ratchet, you can feel the weight of a quality one. And if you ratchet it, you can hear and feel the quality in the ratcheting mechanism.

    I would recommend you get the Repco brand or the ToolPro brand from supercheap during sales at either place. Probably ToolPro during a supercheap sale is the best deal. They feel as good as Sidchrome or kinchrome and are cheaper but have a lifetime warranty.

    I started out with this exact mechpro tool kit and much of it is broken now but it did the job for a while when I was starting out until I could afford better. But the better quality stuff is cheaper than ever now.
