SSD or HDD for storing media + Plex + torrent?

Hi there,

I'm running out of space on my notebook (using Windows) and I would like to get a external drive (usb connection) for storing my media, also playing the media through Plex from this external drive in my laptop to the TV and finally seeding my files.

Can someone please recommend me what is more suitable for my case? SSD or HDD?

I understand both features and price difference, but not sure which one is more suitable for me.

Thanks!

HDD will be fast enough, cheaper and higher capacity but probably heavier

  • HDD.. waste of money for a SSD via USB

  • Thanks for clarifying guys. And what brand would you recommend? Looking for 2TB to 4TB, budget $100 to $200. Cheers

    • buy whatever's cheapest. Brand doesn't matter much.

  • Ok, I have two finalists:

I liked the portable because it is USB powered so no external power source is required. Just a bit concerned that my laptop is not very powerful and this could use more resources of the computer. Can someone please confirm it that is correct?

And liked the desktop version because you can leave it on a vertical position therefore using less space. On the other hand it is required to be connect on power, which is bad :/

    What do you guys think?

    • are you sure there's stock in your links?

I'd personally recommend you wait for the next front page deal to pop up - there'll be huge savings if you wait.

I don't see the argument of 'less space' as the desktop drives are significantly bigger to the point that you'd just prefer a smaller drive lying down on the desk.

Also portable is usually more expensive than desktop, so definitely get the portable link. You won't find a portable for under $130, but desktops have dropped below $125 many times

Get 1 now… buy another later as hdd storage gets cheaper.

Also… mayb consider an ssd to ur current notebook.
    Will make things real quick.
