AMD or INTEL

Hey all.

Ive been out of the computer build stuff for some time.

Im looking at a new system..

But deciding on the AMD or INTEL
I am a big Intel fan , But for the sake of it i can save $160 or more on the cpu alone if i go AMD

The desktop will be used for a range of things as well as gaming (not hardcore)

What would you pick ?

If you're not too hardcore and don't want/need to overclock then you can save quite a few dollars by going non-K (Intel).

yep, overclocking is becoming increasingly difficult to justify now that it requires a more expensive CPU and motherboard. So I'd go for a non-K Intel

  • Ok I am an AMD fan but seriously get intel.

AMD hasn't done amazing things in the desktop CPU range for awhile and their CPU's don't run as quick, aren't good bang for buck and run hotter. It sucks because intel is directly at fault on why AMD cpu's are in such a bad place right now but thats another story.

As for what to grab you can wait for Kogan to have a sale, I got my cpu for 100 dollars cheaper than what MSY sell them for. Only go for K models if you plan on overclocking, if not.

I would go for an i5 probably the lower model if you aren't planning on heavy gaming or graphics work.

  • Thanks for giving reasons too !

I'll defiantly be waiting for a bargain EG the kogan 20% off last month was very doable in Intel prices or amazon order.

I do notice the K series base clock is also higher than non K
Have taken into account that K series do not come with standard coolers too

Just summing up peoples thoughts with AMD Vs Intel VS Price / Quality

It's not a lot higher. The small difference is unlikely to make any noticeable difference. The extra money in your bank account on the other hand… :)

AMD hasn't been competitive since 2006 when Core 2 smashed them and they haven't recovered. Zen might change this or it might not. The minimum for an all rounder that lasts now would be an i5 6500 non K as the 6400 is clocked too low. Add a modern chipset with all the trimming - H170 - and at least 8GB of RAM and you are set.

  • The other issue for the Intel K series is that they don't come with a stock cooler. You'll have to spend extra for a third party cooler. While it'll provide better cooling - spending extra isn't for everyone.
