Is the Telstra $30 prepaid option the cheapest around for International calls?

Hi there,

I have a visitor from Sri Lanka who will be staying with me for a few months. He wants to make phone calls to Sri Lanka, roughly 100 minutes per month. He does not need much local minutes or data even.

I have looked around and the cheapest option I could find was the "Telstra $30 Pre-Paid Freedom Plus" package with $200 international credits. That should be about 150 minutes I believe. I am on Optus and their International value packs do not have Sri Lanka listed, otherwise I would have just added it to my package and let him use mine for everything.

Do you know if there are any cheaper options available?

Cheers.

  • Doesn't Freedom Plus expire in 28 days and you have to recharge to keep the credit?

What about Aldimobile as you go? Expiry is 365 days. Rate is 10c/minute so $10 a month.

    • If you don't recharge, you'll lose your rollover credit ie. any of your unused $200 international credit, not your unused $30 credit. He would need to recharge $30 minimum every 28 days to keep using the $200 international credit.

You can transfer the $30 regular credit to someone else on Telstra via Me2You to a maximum of $10 per day, with a 25 cent fee each time.

If your friend doesn't care about keeping a fixed number, maybe he could buy a bunch of discount stater kits, use and discard every 28 days.

Now that is a cool idea. :D

      I see your point.

He is afraid that he will end up paying a large bill if he go for a PAYG plan. But I will keep that option open.

I checked the Aldimobile PAYG plan. Why is that the internal rate is $0.10 per minute and national rate is $0.12 per minutes? Does not make any sense to me, unless I am reading it wrong.

      • It's not unusual for some international destinations to cost less than local.

Understood. I will buy the Aldimobile PAYG and see how things go in the first month. Thank you for the suggestion.

  • Check out Lebara. Either the Mini Mega Plan for $24.90 with 150 minutes, or the $10 plan with calls charged at 8c/min + 29c flagfall.

  • Virgin Mobile Simple Plan

90 day validity, 15c per min.

So 100 mins = $15 which would come out the $19 recharge (or 126mins per recharge).

  • Global VoLTE/voip solutions present superior value over local operators.
GV will charge 2, 1 or 0cents (PAYG, prepaid) to many destinations.

    For ea US$ 10 deposit, about 500-1000 mins non-expiring.
