Acer laptop not booting after RAM upgrade ES1-411-C2TL

I purchased the crucial 8GB DDR3 1.35v SODIMM from the previous Amazon deal.

Crucial 8GB Single DDR3 1600 MT/s (PC3-12800) CL11 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory CT102464BF160B

When I put it into the Acer ES1-411-C2TL that requires 1.35v RAM, and the notebook will not post. I can hear the CPU fan, and that is about it. I tried the 8GB stick in my Lenovo W530, which uses 1.5v memory and it boots fine.

Problem with the RAM or just not compatible with the Acer? Could the ram not be operating correctly at 1.35v, but working on 1.5v? What is the process and risk of returning goods to Amazon?

Any help will be appreciated.

  • Your ram isn't faulty. It's probably just not compatible with your Acer

Do a BIOS update first and see if it fixes the issue

    • I'll see if there are any updates.

  • Stupid question: Did you correctly sit the new module into Acer's RAM slot? You may have misaligned the module in the midst of the excitement. It happened to me long ago.

Test 1. With the new RAM in the Lenovo, run MemTest86 to check the new module. If it passed all the tests then you can be very certain that the module is good.

Test 2. Put the old Acer RAM into the Lenovo and run MemTest86 to check that it is also good.

Test 3. If the old Acer RAM tested OK in the Lenovo, put it back into the Acer and run MemTest86. This will test the memory circuits on the Acer laptop.

If all three tests are OK but the Acer still won't POST with the new module, then you have a compatibility problem.

I have not needed to return an item to Amazon, but I heard it is relatively easy and that Amazon is one of the good guys. Visit their Returns & Refunds page for help.

    • Thanks for the reply. I habe reseated it multiple times. It works fine with the 2G dimm. I have a feeling it requires tad more than 1.35v and that is causing the issue.

  • I have just bought one 8gb Kingston RAM for the same laptop for $38 approx hope it doesn't do the same

    • The original 2G RAM is Kingston too. Probably a safer bet that it will be compatible.

      • oh okay hopefully, if you want one get from mymemory uk

        • Keep me updated on your Kingston RAM. Would be good to know if it is compatible.

        • @zealmax: Sure, I'll let you know

        • @zealmax: My Ram arrived but these guys sent me 4gb instead of 8gb and ended up getting full refund however got the 4gb running fine on the laptop.

        • +1

@codename47: Lucky. 4GB is probably all you need for this laptop.

        • @zealmax: Yeah seems to work. I got it for free basically and putting my old one on sale for cheap too
