I just did a trial run on an airport. Bangkok (DMK) to Hotel is about 600 Thai Baht ($US17), which is pretty good for a LIMO pick up. Some Hotels charge 1300 Thai Baht for LIMO pick ups. Taxis will run to about 350 Baht including airport fee and tolls, but the DMK taxi queues are not something that I enjoy late at night after a long flight. Although the taxis in Bangkok are very reliable, this is a good option for people who don't know their way around. Personally I normally take a bus and skytrain for about 80 baht total. This company seems to be based in Hanoi, but has good reviews on tripadvisor https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attraction_Review-g293924-d88… And so I will give it a +

    • What about going from the other bkk airport to main city itself? Bus and train as well? First time to bkk mid June so any tips would be appreciated =)

TAXIS: Go down escalator to level 1. Taxi directions are well sign posted. At BKK normally no taxi queues so really good. They have self-serve terminals system that reminds me of Coles/Woolies self check out. There is someone there who will help you, but simply just push a button on a terminal and you get a number ticket which corresponds to numbers above where taxis are parked, and you walk to that taxi. On top of the meter reading, you add 50 baht to the meter for the airport fee, and you have to pay 2 tolls which total 75 baht as they usually take the toll road. All up it will cost you about 350 baht too. More often than not though, now, taxis from BKK will hassle you initially about a set fee, usually 500 or 600 baht, and so you have to firmly say several times "meter" "meter" "meter". And make sure that they turn their meter on. I hate this hassle, and they get no tip from me if they hassle me about a set fee.
TRAIN/BUS: There is a train from the basement level of the airport. It used to have express trains, but now I think that they stop at lots of stops. I think 150 baht. And then it is really a matter of where your accommodation is located. If located near the skytrain line (BTS), then take the skytrain from Phaya Thai. If near the subway (MRT) Then get off the train at Makkasan and walk Phetchaburi MRT. But I would just take a taxi for first trip, as you are not saving more than 150 baht ($A5.50). Or even take a Limo with this deal. The limo/meeting area at Bkk is a well designated area, and you will see them holding up signs.
Google maps clearly shows the tollways and trains.
There are lots of touts at the airports touting "Limo" or "Taxis" but they are 'rip offs' and just walk past them.

PS Bangkok is very safe. The worst thing that could happen to you is that you will get taken to a tailor/jeweller/restaurant, that you did not want to go to, by a tuk tuk driver.
Expats NEVER travel by tuk tuk (except for the free Tuk tuks put on by some hotels to take you to the main road).
Or a taxi driver will try to rip you off 100 - 200 baht with a set fee rather than go on the meter. If a taxi pulls up and quotes a set fee, just say "meter" "meter". If they refuse, then wave them on. The taxis will be queuing up behind him to take you.

        • wow that's a pretty thorough response! thank you so much! I think I'll probably get a taxi for the airport transfers, seems like the easiest thing to do. I haven't organised accommodation yet but I should probably take advantage of the 40% off Accor hotels posted recently (some decent Ibis hotels going for <$30!). Thanks again! :)

        • @chanraymond: You are welcome ;o) Ibis Nana is extremely good value - sale price about 1060 THB per night $A39 per night, as long as you don't mind that it is near the Nana red light district. Still very safe, and worth a look, even for ladies. People in the area and staff in local premises are very welcoming to both sexes. Ibis has a free Tuk tuk that runs from the hotel to Nana BTS. It runs down soi 6 and that gets choked up with traffic, and so it is not very reliable. I think that it probably does not run real late. Possibly not 10 pm - 6 am at a guess. Citadines has a member sale on too (Free to join) I like the one in Soi 8 about 1600 THB with the sale. 24 hour tuktuk and very reliable and consistently very good hotel & staff. A bit of a walk to BTS but a really nice street with great food and drink outlets. I usually walk it for the exercise. Soi 11 also near Nana BTS also great for food and drink. KhaoSan area not my 'cup of tea', but I am the wrong age group. Also I am not keen on Silom. Lots of tourists stay in the riverside area, but I think that it is very expensive. Have Fun!!

        • @peck: Thanks peck, you're a great help - I had to google the places you mentioned haha! I'll have a look into accommodation more in detail soon, but I was considering Ibis nana as it's reasonably cheap and convenient. Thanks again!! and yes I will definitely have lots of fun and photos :)
