Avoid ATM Fees in United States - Cashback

I'm travelling to Hawaii in July and I have a Citibank debit card. However there does not seem to be Citibank ATMs anywhere on the islands. I only need a little bit of cash for tipping purposes as I'll be spending almost exclusively on my BankWest credit card.

I'm thinking of using cashback (I think similar to our cash out) at stores like Walmart. Does anyone know if it's possible with an Australia issued Citibank debit card or had any experience with it?

I'll be there for two weeks, any recommendation on local SIM (mainly for data) is also welcome.

Not sure about cashback but check this link out: https://online.citi.com/US/GCL/citilocator/flow.action
There seems to be plenty of Moneypass ATMs where you can withdraw cash and I believe Citibank is part of their fee-free network. Call Citibank and confirm if you can withdraw from those for free.

I used my Citibank card in Hawaii in march with no issue.

Just go to any 7-11 and use the ATM there. U.S. wide it's fee-free for all Citibank cards (includes Australian-issued Citibank Plus debit card).

  • I was in Hawaii earlier this year.

Moneypass atms at walmart still charge me a fee for using a citibank card. I guess it only applies to US issued Citibank cards.

  • Yeah when I was in the US in 2013 I used the ATMs located in the Seven-11s, they were almost all Citibank ATMs if memory serves - and even in Hawaii where I don't think they were, I was still not charged any ATM fees (for using my Citibank Plus).

To echo everyone's posts really- Citibank Plus only has fee-free withdrawals at Citibank ATMs (which are thankfully all in 7-11s as well).
You can get charged up to $5 at some other banks' ATMs.

  • Will all those mentioning 7/11 have a bit of a respect for all those that died:

  • Great. Thanks so much for the answers. Didn't know about the 7-11 before. Will definitely look up 7-11 locations now.
