ez faceplate kit: go to bunnings/masters and get a can of spraypaint, take the faceplate off and spray it down cleanly and let it dry.

just saved you $60, put it towards more ram

    • $65 for a faceplate… eh… no thanks

    • That bezel faceplate thing is crazy!

This is a server, totally the wrong product to put on display. So I am gobsmacked at the idiot at HP marketing department who came up with the idea of a coloured front.

    • And as a nice bonus you can lose the HP logo if you're into that.

  • How loud are these things?

somewhat, sounds like a mini diesel engine. comparing to this 40NL is much quieter almost unnoticeable.

anyway you get used to it after some time.

      • ah cheers. not what I'm after then.

        • It's not that loud(I just got one and paid more than 279… yay!). On boot it is loud as the fans are going full speed but once you boot into the OS I wouldn't call it loud. I have just moved mine from under a desk to behind the living room couch and can't hear it when I am sitting in the chair directly infront of where it is sitting and the disks are going constantly as I am migrating data of a NAS I am selling to a mate.

Apparently if you use AHCI mode though the fan controller stops working but a comment lower says that was fixed in an update.

      • Sounds weird. Three G8s I've seen are very quiet: the hard drives make more noise than the fan.
On the other hand, there're reports about poorly polished CPU heat sinks. Maybe that's the case?

        • I replaced my 40NL with a G8 and noticed a clear difference in noise, 40NL being much quieter. its sitting under my desk and i can clearly hear the hiss. not a big issue when used as a remote server definitely not ideal for stationing somewhere in the living room as a media server.

@Monkey D Luffy: get a Noctua Fax, they're worth every cent

        • @Damonator84: was wondering what is Noctua Fax for a while, google is great!

        • @Monkey D Luffy: Fan LOL

        • @Monkey D Luffy: Are you using the disks in AHCI or RAID? I've found it pretty quiet in RAID but I have heard AHCI mode makes the fans 100% all of the time.

        • @FaceOfMutiny: interesting that could be the case, i have only 2 disks installed. 250G SSD for the OS and a 4TB WD RED for data. Power consumption is pretty good though ~50watts throughout.

If you update the firmware with the latest SPP then they are quite quiet as long as they are not under full load. There used to be an issue where fans would always be full blast if your HDDs were not in RAID.

  • I'm keen for a Gen8 microserver with the compatible low-power Xeon (E3-1230v2). Any stores offering this as a bundle?

  • Thoughts on this vs say a netgear 4 Bay NAS with 2gb?

Purely video streaming and backup. Have a large music collection I'd like to add as well to it.

    • +1

this would wreck the Netgear if you put some time into setting it up.

using something like OpenMediaVault on this + Plex and network shares would be amazing

Plex is an awesome piece of software that allows you to organise your media collection and use it across most devices. I had a 4TB drive full of unordered movies, TV shows and music and Plex picked them up fairly well and organised them. About 2 hours later I could stream them to my PC, tablet, Xbox, phone, you name it.

      • I have just switched from using KODI to PLEX as its much easier for the missus to just use the tv remote and go to the PLEX app on my smart tv than a HTPC. I thought I'd keep using KODI but yeah PLEX pretty much does everything except for my music DVD iso's.

The microserver is a bit weak to transcode files though unless you get one of the more expensive ones or switch the CPU(which you can do).

        • well I'm running Plex on an old atom box and leaving devices to do transcoding

not fast but uses <10w under load (running Windows 7, Transmission-QT, and Plex at the same time)

  • Faceplate doesn't come in yellow or pink. Disappointing.

  • If you've got a supported RAID card installed, or are using the integrated RAIDRAID card it's quiet. I've got a P420, fans run at about 15%

  • Shopping Express still cheaper when freight is factored in. Warehouse1 is one of those sellers that make some of their margin on the freight, so they can lower the margin on the list price of their products. Dodgy.
