Recommend a Bicycle for Aged Parent

Hello Guys,

Please recommend a bicycle for aged parent (~60yo) who has chronic low back problem.
He wants to use it for general purpose like cycle around local area, parks etc basically a light user (won't exceed more than 10kms a day).

Thanks

    • Thanks mate. He is bit better state than what recumbent.net.au can offer him.
Looking for something that allows them to sit upright more :)

    <10km a day is good effort for a ~60yo

How about a bike that has an electric motor to assist pedalling. That will allow reduced stress on back for up hills, will also allow longer rides.

    • I have an e-bike and LOVE it (am not 60 but do have back issues), exactly for teardrops reasons. The only negative is the weight of the bike…if it needs to be lifted (public transport, into car etc) or pushed up steps into the house it may not be ideal for a bad back. Otherwise, they're brilliant!

  • I don't know where to get it from but there is a guy around Fitzroy who has a motorised adult trike. Looks great for popping down to the shops to pick up grocerys etc and has a bit more stability and carrying capacity. If anyone knows where you can get them from I'd appreciate it.

Just spitballing here, but I wonder if the cushy tyres of those fat bikes would help with absorbing shock that might otherwise exacerbate lower back pain?

    • …oh, plus they look totally badass! :)

      • But they are really heavy, so harder work (I have a cheap one and it weighs more than twice what my mountain bike weighs)

        • Good point.

          …but, badass!!! ;)

@StewBalls: I took mine away at Easter. Got soooo many comment riding around the c'van park. Nearly killed me riding it into town up a hill, but it's a bit of fun and turns heads.

  • What's your budget? It sounds like a basic hybrid bike would work. Gumtree is always worth a look

My 66 year old mum bought herself a folding bike from super cheap to get around. It has suited her well. Her balance is not great but she still manages this bike. It's light and easy to manoeuvre and has a large springy seat which she finds comfortable.
She doesn't do any great distance on it. Just daily trips to the complex pool and clubhouse for craft club.

    • Thanks. Link?

      • I don't think they sell them anymore. It was just a cheapo folding bike she saw on display outside her local super cheap auto. I think she paid about $100-120 for it.
Kogan have one for $199 that looks similar https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/fortis-urban-traveller-20-foldi…
Aldi have them from time to time too.
I think they are great little runabout bikes. A lot of them come complete with mud guards and bag carriers which you would normally have to fork out extra for. They are super easy to ride with a step through frame. They sit you in a very upright riding position which is quite comfortable.
They're not particularly quick when compared to a full-size bike.

  • Make sure you get something you can step through ie a ladies bike, makes it easier to climb onto.
