Acer Aspire Switch 11 i3 128GB SSD FHD 4GB Ram $659 Delivered @ PC Byte eBay

90

Seems to be a good deal, a lot cheaper than I could find elsewhere.

Reviews seem mostly positive however the build quality is apparently on the lower end particularly in the keyboard / lower half. Battery life is passable but not great at around 5 hours.

Ordered one for myself, looks like they shipped via startrack despite me requesting auspost which is a minor inconvenience.

    • Thought it goes back to a different depo not the post office lol.

      I'll inevitably miss the delivery

      • You might be in luck - before I began using Parcel Locker I found that StarTrack would take missed deliveries to my nearest AusPost except where they were really big (ie I missed delivery of a 50" TV but AusPost wouldn't store it only due to size).

    • +1

I believe Star Track was bought out by Aust Post.

      btw. Core i3 4012Y

This cpu might be problematic for some people at only 1.5ghz…

      • Shouldn't be terrible performance. For the price it looks good.

Will report back once I get mine.

  • Good price, I looked at these recently whilst shopping for a 2-in-1…I ended up getting an ASUS T300, mainly for the 12.5" screen…but one thing these have going for them is a really nice FHD display, actually quite impressive, so if that's a factor…

  • No one mentioned the free MS Home & Student 2013?

Good deal for a pen-tablet…wish I could justify it- lol.

    Nice find, OP.

    • For what it's worth it does not come with the pen. $50 or so off eBay by the look of things.

      • If you can use it like a Cintiq, $50 would still be a steal…Is the screen pressure sensitive, by any chance? Has anyone here used it as a graphics art platform?

        • Not sure what a cintiq is but the pressure sensitivity appears to work in reviews however is a bit hit and miss. Ie not all that accurate.

I'm sure if art was your thing you'd want something more accurate. For annotating documents etc it looks like it'd be good though.

        • The tech it uses is Synaptics active stylus tech. I'd assume it wouldn't be good enough for art.

        • @Oversimplified:

Yeah, t'was just a wish I knew wasn't going to happen- lol…My daughter has interest (& talent) in art, is thinking of game design (lots of art involved) in uni next year. I'd like to get her a good graphics tablet as a grad gift this year & while investigating, saw the Cintiq.

WOW, to the tech of it. YOW! to the $$$!

          Ta

        • @Geekomatic: hahahahahaha, I am not a person who has a talent in art, that said, since I do use tablets for note taking. As far as I could see, while Wacom is a POS company that can't do software or anything properly, their stylus technology is one of the best (with limitations of course). Wacom holds almost monopoly in stylus market in my country for that reason.

If what she wants is just something with Wacom EMR tech (ignoring OS), there are cheaper alternatives.

Galaxy Note tablet probably would be released this year, September (hopefully, because the rumours do date back to 2014~2015 with Samsung constantly dropping the project before release). That said, Android I don't think would be good for graphical work (I do know they have programs that allow them to be connected to the PCs, that said I don't think it allows pressure sensitivity to work with PC).
There are few Chinese ones out there at cheap price (Cube i7 Stylus).
Surface Pro 2 if you could get your hands on it would be cheap and have Wacom stylus.

Probably more since it's been a while since I've done my research.

Some people praise Apple Pencil, I personally didn't like it (though as I said, I am not an art person, but I simply use the tablet for note taking and graphs and such). That said it wouldn't be a bad idea to try it out first. Though I am not sure iOS would be good for graphical stuff.

n-trig on Surface Pro 4 did get a lot of praises as well, so that might be something to try out as well.

        • I was wrong, in my hand I hold a pen!

        • @knk:

mine came with it too. ad says 3 yr warranty but acer documents say 1, so that sucks

  • Seems you can even add a 2nd SSD inside of the keyboard?

    http://community.acer.com/t5/Windows-Tablets-and-Convertible…

    That's pretty cool!

    ;)

    • That's pretty damn cool indeed. I wonder how well windows would handle the connection and disconnection of the dock though. Wonder if it's detected as removable storage or a hotplug sata drive?

Bit late though, already have a 128gb sd card ready to go in :).

      • I have a lower end Switch 10E (Atom) and can day that the inbuilt 500gb works fine, I've even got it encrypted. Acer has a utility that seems to be managing the hot swapping behaviour + encryption. I do think it shows up as a removable drive. I also have a 128GB MicroSD in the tablet half for storage.

I should note that it takes a few seconds for the 500gb drive to be recognised but I'm able to run programs off it

      • oh so it's expandable that way too? Definitely keen to get my hands on this. I just need something that essentially is a tablet, but can be used for work if necessary, albeit slower than my main laptop, which i dont want to take away with me on work trips.

I imagine the dock should work ok given the other models have HDDs in the keyboard. not sure it's necessary given the 128GB SSD. that's a fair amount of space for this sort of device. but i guess if it was your only computer.

how do you find battery life? contemplating taking my ipad as well. wouldn't be a huge weight addition to take both away, at least on my first trip with it in a couple of weeks time. also i have ibooks to read which wont be transferrable.

        • 128gb should be enough unless you've got alot of media, I added a 128gb sd as there are some operating system images I like to always have a copy of on hand. If it weren't for this the SSD storage would have been enough. If you're planning to reinstall the OS on it and not use the acer build you'll end up with some additional free space also.

Someone else posted some information on getting a hdd installed into the dock when there isn't one. Basically it looks like it uses a proprietary connector, so you'll need to order the cable from acer pull apart the keyboard and install.

Battery life is okay, ~5 hours or so. It gets me through a day of being out of the office without charging, obviously not on it the whole time though.

That CPU is almost 3 year old.

  • Link doesn't go to the deal, but a quick ebay search found it. It said there was click and collect on the main search results page, but couldn't work out how to use it.

This is a pretty good price, but it doesn't specify the model. unsure if it has a HDD in the keyboard or not.

I spent all day going store to store, and none even had the 10 switch let alone an 11. It's not even on the Acer Australian site.

detachables with this kind of specs at this price don't exist, keyboard hdd or not. most had 32 or 64gb eMMCs, so a 128GB SSD trumps by a mile.

and a 3 yr warranty? Also trumps most 1 year warranties.

I've ordered one so I can take it on work trips just in case work crops up that has to be done (anticipating this is the case for my next trip). sure beats carrying a full sized laptop and a tablet around.

    • The eBay listing has probably changed since I posted this.

I've been using mine, however upon buying it loaded win 10 straight away from scratch.

This model doesn't have a hdd in the keyboard, that was reserved for the pro model I think. It has a 128gb ssd.

Overall it seems well built, the magnetized docking mechanism is good and the hinge solid. It does fall backwards due to the weight of the unit when it's fully open though.

Performance is good for this price point and works well enough for Web browsing office and in my case Vsphere and remote administration of servers.

      The screen is awesome.

      • boo. wanted 8.1 so i could put a 7 shell on it (i have no idea how to use 8 it's just so different and i avoid it like the plague) is 10 more like 7? I've been avoiding 10 due to privacy issues amongst others, but i guess its less of an issue with a device i use only a few times a year for work trips.

        • You don't have to update to 10, I just can't comment on using it with 8.

8 isn't all that complicated to use, the start screen is "different" to the start menu if not pretty damn out of place however it is functional and easy enough to use.

10 is a little more Windows 7-esque in the sense it has a somewhat more traditional start menu.

        • @knk:
mine seems to have come with 8.1 Also it has an acer pen. didn't expect that. it's very nice
