Good News for Telstra Freedom Users (Netflix Google Play Billing)

Nexflix app for Android had a update today and I read this.

"WHAT'S NEW

So we can use the credit to buy Nextflix subscriptions now. Yeeee.

  • Are there anything good to watch on the AU catalogue?

Off topic, but can you do the same thing with Spotify Premium?

    • Spotify doesn't support Google play subscription (yet!). But you can give Google play music a go. Very similar service and I am personally very contented with it.

AU Content is pretty good since it does have all of Netflix's high quality original shows. You can sign up for a trial for a month and see if you like their content.

    • I got bored of the Aussie Netflix catalogue after about 3 months. You need a Smartflix type arrangement to access the global Netflix catalogue which then makes Netflix completely awesome.

  • Nice, now you just need to grab a buncha credit at reduced prices eg. $5 for $30 Telstra credit then you can get Netflix at 16.66% of face value.

There's a bunch of other services you can do this for as well including Foxtel Mobile - 15 bucks a month (premium channel package) face value, $2.49 per month after doing Telstra arbitrage :).

Where do you get Telstra credit at reduce prices…?

    • +1

      $5 for $30 Telstra credit

Would like to know where from as well.

  • I find it nice that they at least state why they require more permission (well I don't think it informs us enough that said, not many does specify why altogether). I wish more app developers state things about permission.

    Also, yay.

    Thanks akula.

Anyone have an idea when this is meant to be available?

  • +1

Just signed up for month free plus payment via Google play using Telstra pre paid credit.

Had been trying for a couple of days and finally worked today, I think I had WiFi disabled and 4g running and it came straight up.

    • I am trying to do this at the moment, I am creating a new account, have Wi-Fi disabled, though can only see Credit card, PayPal and Netflix Gift Card.

Has anyone else been able to successfully bill Netflix to Telstra?

      • Never mind, uninstalling and reinstalling the app did the trick in the end (even if the app is the latest version).

Didn't get the one month trial, spoke to Netflix about this, they could apparently detect my old account based on tracking devices used. >_<

  • Can you confirm guys if it works? I can't see the option on existing account. If it works defo moving now as red tube and Netflix come out of Telstra :)

  • +1

Red tube? Was that a Freudian slip?! :D

    • Lol I don't the premium YouTube is it YouTube Red? 😂

      • Just messing with you, yeah YouTube red is premium, no ads, plays in background and can save videos to device they are the main features in enjoying at the moment.

        • Hi I have been trying for days for Netflix but no luck. How did you manage to do it? Thanks

  • I have tried this for the past month, no luck still. Tried using existing account, and when I try to goto payment options, it sends me to the webpage out of the app.
I did try signing up with a new email address, and it does let the payment options happen while inside the app, but only says credit card, paypal and voucher. I feel this is the only current way to do the update to carrier billing since the other way takes you out of the app.

    • You need to create a new account, and I had the same issue, uninstalling and reinstalling the app caused the Google Play pop-up to come up for me.

    • I just downloaded the netflix Android app today from the google play store. (netflix v 4.6.0 build 7816)
Created a netflix account for the first time.

The permissions page for the app DOES include "In-app purchases - Google Play billing service" , BUT
My experience is the same as yours, the account payment options menu takes me to the website, not google play, so no option for using Telstra credit.

I think this could be marked as a not-possible bargain until someone can show how it's possible? A screenshot perhaps.

      • It is working, just finicky.

It sounds like you have already created the Netflix account and are clicking on the 'Account' link within the app. You have to select the payment method during the actual sign up process, not when signed in to the app.

Were you provided with a free trial?

        • yes I got the free trial with my registration.
I installed the app. Opened the app. And couldn't do anything without registering an account.
So when I registered within the app, it forced me to enter credit card, or paypal, or gift card.
i couldn't proceed without one of those. I chose paypal…

        • @freo: same experience here. I could not see telstra billing option

        • Same here, I tried with existing account - no option. I tried with a brand new account - no option. Netflix told me it's only available on some phones at this stage. I tried with a Nexus 6P and a Nexus 5, one running Android N (preview), the other Android Marshmallow.

        • @zacjanes: Try clearing app data and cache, uninstalling and reinstalling, and creating a new account using a new email address. From memory the pop-up displays on the page where you choose your payment method. If you are able to view your library / use Netflix, you have gone too far. Not sure whether that device thing is true or not, they will say anything if they don't know the answer. Worked for me on a Galaxy Note 5.

        • @Marrk:

I tried this on a brand new Nexus 5X that didn't even have the Netflix app yet… Might have to try to borrow a friend's device to set it up. Annoying though!

  • @freo: "it forced me to enter credit card, or paypal, or gift card"

You need to try and get the Google Play pop-up to display when you are on this screen. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app did the trick for me.

Try doing this and perhaps also clear app data and cache, you will need to sign up for another new Netflix account.

  • Does anyone know if there is a way to re-active an account via android?

I cancelled my subscription, but when I went onto android to resubscribe via android, it said my account was not active and that I needed to reactivate it online.

    • google play billing is stopped for some reasons, ( read here and heard from Netflix as well).

Those have old subscription ( paying via (GP) google Play) is OK and those who are new or cancelled the subscription, no longer able to pay via GP.

ps: Netflix engineers were looking into it when I spoke on 27th July and I was not given any timeline or promise that it will be back again.

if i did this, can i watch on my pc?

    • Yes once the account is paid up you can watch on your PC, PS4, Smart TV, Tablet, whatever device you own.

thanks Agret, Im sorry, forgot to ask if the viewing size would be at full resolution?

    • yes and resol. depends on your internet speed as well.

  • many thanks Agret

  • Is there any way to do this without an android device?

    • what do you mean ?

new users are not able to pay for netflix via Google Play ( using Telstra credit).

for non android users, paying via Itunes is another option.. ( unless you have got it discounted)

      • I mean I have lots of Telstra credit but no android devices to use Google Play to get it into netflix etc. Pity it doesn't work anymore anyway

        • Can't pay for Netflix on Telstra billing?

Any other ways to cut down the usual monthly bill? (missed the recent woolies rewards deal for cheap Netflix GCs

  • I spent about half an hour on the phone with Netflix on Saturday trying to get this working. After trying everything they said "It's in the process of being rolled out slowly". I think they just don't know what's going on.

The Google Play Store shows it as having In-App Purchases so I think the hold up is on Netflix side.

    • I spoke to them few weeks ago over the phone, phone rep involved software engineers and later concluded that Google Play Billing is stopped by Netflix in Australia (something like that).

When it will be working again for new users, they don't know.

        • thanks for the input,

You signed up recently (1-2 weeks ago)?

or you saying ur google play billing is working for netflix?

I am aware that people who signed up and have not unsubscribed in b/w are still able to make use of telstra credit to pay netflix via google play.
          But not new users anymore

        • Just tried it again (uninstall and reinstall) not available as yet for me :(

        • +1

@Baahubali: Hey @baahubali, just trued today and I am very pleased to say that after months of trying it finally is here.

        • @smarter_fool: that's gr8 News, will check and provide update Soon

        • @smarter_fool: just tried mine, unfortunately no option to pay using telstra credit during registration…

        • +1

@televisi: Try uninstalling and re-installing the app. I noticed a new check box which Confirms 18 years of age and then boom.. The googleplay billing appeared. Phone:Nexus6P:OS- Nougat

        • @Baahubali:

Confirming, its working now. Happy Days :)

        • Yes, works on mine after multiple try

  • Randomly Googled this again on the weekend and had success thanks to this guide.

    https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2446718&…

Uninstalling/reinstalling and creating a new account did nothing for me (again), the sign out trick did!

    • +2

this worked for me too. Hurray!!

      • Did you get to keep your original account jainp

        Thanks!

        • Nope. Created a new one.
