So what are you doing to do with your pi?

Hi everyone,

Congrats to all who scored a raspberry pi 3 via the awesome deal posted by @cmdwedge (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237815).

So what's your project going to be?

I'm thinking media server (boring!) Or a retro game table. I'm sure there are some better ideas out there though.

Post your ideas, accessories etc!

I'm interested in knowing this too, Pi 3 B is pretty awesome with WiFi and BT builtin.

I didn't score one from there, but have been using them for years. Currently have 5 in operation all recently upgraded to RPi3 units.

    2x Media players (OSMC)
1x 3D Printer controller (with Aldi 3d printer) via OctoPrint with Pi Camera
1x In my scratch built arcade machine
1x In my workshop with a Pi Camera which is being used as a large screen format magnifying system/workshop desktop. Retrofitted it into a Humanware SmartView SV5000 which originally used a CCD Camera and made for the visually impared. Great for inspecting small components like record stylus tips and checking solder work etc etc. Workshop stuff.

wow the last one is very impressive! great to see such varied applications (i guess that's the point right?!)

BTW i'm thinking of the simple rp3 case - this is the cheapest I've found so far: http://www.banggood.com/Official-Raspberry-Pi-Case-For-Raspb…

Yeah the last one is pretty neat. The doubling up as a basic desktop computer really comes in handy too, I normally don't like having any nice clean machines in my messy workshop!

The Pi is a great 'all round tool' for when you need a computing need in a pinch. And because they're pretty good on power you can even power them with those portable battery phone chargers. On my 10,000mAh xaomi it'll run for around 20 hrs. In fact, that's how I power the one for my printer. At the end of the day, plug it into my solar station and let it recharge overnight ready for the next day.

Originally I bought the Pi cases from element14, however since getting the 3d printer i've been printing my own cases, those printers are handy buggers!

all I know is that you can't have your Pi and eat it too.

  • I know jack all about Linux, but with Rasp Pi 3 I'm going to have to start from the very basics and might just end up using my Pi as a dedicated file server and a Spotify radio.

    • me too! (starting from scratch), feel like this will be a great introduction.

      • its a learning curve for sure. i had always wanted to mess around with linux ever since ive been using pc's back in the 90's but just never had the motivation till i needed to run ubuntu on an old desktop to use it to log temperatures outside. once you get a basic understanding of doing things its really not hard.

best thing to remember if you get stuck is just to google "raspberry pi [issue you are having as best as you can explain it]" and because there are so many people new to linux what ever you are experiencing you can pretty much bet someone, somewhere has experiences the exact same thing and has already asked the question you need to ask

  • I have a first generation Pi that will notify my phone if my garage door has been open for more than an allocated time. I hate waking up in the morning to find someone has accidentally pressed the garage door opener and it's been open all night.

    • Wow that's awesome! What sort of sensors does that need?

  • Got OpenELEC on mine, and am running a whole host of unofficial add-ons to get movies, TV shows and sports. Not perfect, but great for what you get out of it.

I'm eventually going to put OSMC on another SD card and use that so I get a little more functionality

    I have a pi2 that I use as an adblocker with pi-hole.net

My router has a usb port that can power the Pi too which is pretty neat.

a quick google tells me that you can run this directly on a router so i dont even need to "waste" a RPi to have it running :) might give that a try in the near future, i currently have 3 openwrt'ed routers on my home network with a 4th one as a spare/backup/play toy

      • -1

That depends on the router and if the router can run wrt on or not..

        • -1

hence why i mentioned openwrt on my original post… you really do fail at trolling huh?

edit: not to mention that if your smart enough in the first place to be using an RPi and this sort of ad blocker you will be smart enough to already understand the basics of running external programs on routers…. but i guess once again this is all beyond your understanding of even the basics in life (and for everyone else wondering what the (profanity) im talking about, my little friend here has been trolling/stalking my posts on other deals :) )

        • @nosdan:

Shesh are you going to troll everyone one of my comments? As well as send me personal insulting messages?

Anyway I am just saying not every router you can run wrt on.. You seem to think rx8geek wasted his RPi.

        • @Roary:

i specifically said "a" router not "every" router in existence. personally i would much rather run it on one of my $5 routers than "waste" a ~$50 RPi that still needs a router anyway to work, but in saying that i think his idea is brilliantly simple assuming that he dosnt currently have an openwrt'ed router he could utilise instead and also specially if he dosnt have a better use for the RPi yet. if in hte future he finds a better use for the RPi maybe he will remember that some routers can run this without the Pi and save himself time, money and effort and run it directly on his router instead. thats what i would call a win/win situation.

i also specifically said "i dont have to "waste" an RPi" because for me having spare openwrt routers it would be a waste for me. OP is probably in a different set of circumstances to me and this why i didnt just call it a waste but a "waste"

i hope this has cleared up any of your confusion?

im not the one thats spent time going through your previous messages looking for opportunities to troll… that was you doing that… im simply replying to your efforts in doing that when ive received notification of your stalking, nothing more.

  • Did anyone got billed by UPS for receiving the Pi 3 for free.
I spoke to UPS and it was for duties and the amount is $701.10

    • When did you receive such notice? Via email or post?

  • I received via post 14/7/2016.
They are claiming custom duties for my delivery of 67 units

    • You claimed 67 units?? how did you manage that? Sounds about right for that many?

  • No I did not. It was an error and it never came (67 units)
    .

    • wow then that is a huge mistake, you should contact the promoter and tell them there's been an error. Maybe they can sort it out on their end?

  • Currently, this is happening.

    • see the little reply link under each persons comment? click that when your replying to a comment to keep replies grouped together

and no i did not receive any such thing. did you get your Pi? id be telling them where to go. are you sure its not for something else you ordered and forgot about?
