HiFiMAN HE-350 Open-back Headphones ~$156 AUD Shipped (100 USD + 15 USD Shipping) https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-hifiman-he-350?mode=…

The HE-350 ($99.99) is an open-back dynamic headphone. We started with the HE-300, replaced the driver, updated the frame to HiFiMAN’s newest revision, and updated the removable cables to use HiFiMAN’s latest 2.5mm termination (at the earcups, cable ends in a 3.5mm).
Understanding this will be a first headphone for many, we (and our participating community members) decided to focus on neutrality and detail. No huge bass, no massive peaks or valleys, ~12dB delta between highest and lowest point from 20Hz to 15,000Hz. Take a look at the frequency response graph on our drop page (courtesy of Head-Fi). This is a new driver developed by HiFiMAN with a mandate from Massdrop to “redefine the price-to-performance standard”. At $99.99 we’ve raised the bar.

HiFiMAN RE-00 IEMs ~$54 AUD Shipped (35 USD + 5 USD Shipping) https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-x-hifiman-re-00?mode=g…

The RE-00 ($34.99) is a universal IEM based on the RE0. We developed this with the same goal as the HE-350: create a neutral and detailed universal IEM to get as many people in the door as possible. The RE0 sound signature required minimal adjustment (slight change to bass impact, otherwise nothing huge), so most of our efforts were focused on improving durability.
Where the original RE0 had a cable that many found prone to breaking at either end (termination or at the ear pieces), the RE-00 uses new reinforced materials meant to handle years of use.

Not an audio expert myself, but reading around it seems to be a good first purchase for those looking to get into the audiophile community.

Estimated ship date is Aug 5, 2016.
Quantities are initially limited to 5000 pcs of each.
Money is charged from your PayPal account at the end of the drop, so the converted price will vary.

  • Really tempted by these, but I might keep saving for Beyer 990 600, I don't think these will be bassy enough for me, at least no more than my Alessandro
    MS-1's.

If you want more bass, use equaliser - you can alter neutral any which way.

Or, just buy a more bassy headphone???

I'm all for eq, but why buy a headphone that doesn't have the sound signature you want (or close)? Buy as close to your preferred sound signature, then eq.

      • Not if the headphone is physically incapable of producing those frequencies. Which it isn't.

You must know something that frequency response graph isn't showing, 'cause it's showing all the way to 20hz, albeit slightly reduced.

        • @AlexF: That the 990's are capable of 5Hz. The HE-350's only 15Hz.

        • @Aids:

Which musical recording has content below 20Hz?

        • @AlexF: James Blake - limit to your love. That's the only one, ever.

I was pretty tempted to buy the 350s until I read they were dynamic, not planar magnetic, which hifiman is famous for. Is there any reviews regarding this model? I couldn't find anything on head-fi.

    • They haven't existed until this drop.

    • MD is somewhat known for doing substitutions for certain products. They ride the name of a popular product and swap parts for cheaper ones.

      Have done it with backpacks/amps/earphones/tents/pens…

Probably hoping most people don't notice, also Massdrop customer support are damn near useless or don't care at all.

I opened a ticket for a query and potential fault with a product (likely not even warranty), and they reviewed/replied/closed the ticket within about 20 minutes, all 3 of which went to my spam folder and neither answered my questions nor helped with my problem.

Then had the gall to ask me to review how my case was handled!!

      • maybe they treat the americans a bit better.

    • yep was about to say that hifiman is a brand u can trust - but Ive also known them only for their planars.

theres a few newish companies doing planars now so they dont have the monopoly on that anymore.

To enter the audiophile community you must believe confirmation bias does not effect you.

I've previously used and own an earlier iteration of the RE-00 IEMs, (RE-ZEROs, limited edition iteration of the RE-0). If that's still any indication of HiFiMAN's designs, then the RE-00s at $50 might be a decent entry-level choice. If you listen to anything music with emphasis on the bass however, you might want to look for something else or you'll probably likely complain about the lack of bass (HiFiMAN products tend to be more of a Neutral/Balanced sound signature). A decent music player with the bass cranked up could potentially solve this somewhat. Otherwise if you're coming from stock standard $10 earphones, these earphones might deliver a whole new level of clarity to your music.

Side note: The RE-ZEROs was my first entry-level pair, the trigger to one of my more expensive hobbies.

    • How does it compare Xiaomi Piston 2 or 3? Is it worth for an upgrade?

    • I owned a pair of the RE0 in 2010ish. Simply the best earphones I had ever used. Loved it to bits. Coupled with a FiiO it blew my mind.

Like you, it was the gateway drug…which led me to the present where my primary is a $400 IEM… and I'm eyeing the Shure 535s. :)
