Suggestions on a basic desktop PDF editor?

I occasionally edit PDFs: things like splitting, merging, and rotating but not much else. There are some online services that will do this for free, but they are a little cumbersome if you're doing lots of files. Do you have any suggestions for some desktop alternatives? Obviously there's Adboe, Nitro and Foxit, and while I'm happy to pay if necessary, I figured it might be smarter to ask for free/cheaper alternatives that just cover the basics but have a good user interface.

  • Tip - if you are after quality software that is free on the internet - add the words 'open source' to your query.

I just found this:pdfforge after searching 'pdf tool open source' via google.

TBH I have never used it, but it may be what you are after!

    • My Google searches didn't turn up much more than up pointless click-bait lists. I didn't consider open source though. I tried the link you posted and got a malware warning during the installation (probably a false positive, but I can't take any risks on this machine). :(

The free version of Foxit does have basic editing features like adding text boxes and comments, highlighting and filling out forms.

However if you want to split or merge PDFs I think you need the paid version.

      • Thanks.

  • I can recommend PDFill

    Which can

PDFill PDF Tools are FREE PDF functions to merge, split, reorder, delete, encrypt, decrypt, rotate, crop and reformat PDF pages, to add information, header, footer and watermark, to convert images to PDF, PDF to images or PostScript to PDF, to delete, flatten and list form fields, to scan to pdf, to create transparent image, and more.

No watermarks! No pop-up ads! FREE for personal or commercial use! FREE distribution!

I use it to merge, split reorder and rotate, but not much else.

  • LibreOffice Draw can import PDF files and has good vector graphics features.

  • PDF Xchange Editor has a free version that does a lot/all that your require
It operates as your daily driver for viewing and printing to PDF and is much faster than Adobe
Also has some advanced features like click to edit
A few of the features that the Pro version offers you can access but it then puts the watermark
If you want the pro features it is pretty inexpensive - $40 odd for 1 year or $60 odd for 3 years of updates
Totally free so worth a try

  • I ended up finding a coupon for Nitro PDF 10 and picked it up for $169.99. Seems pretty decent so far. Thanks for the suggestions!
