Rejecting a job offer

Hi guys,

I am relatively new to the job market and would like some help as it is a major stepping stone in my life.

I have recently, signed a contract with a company for a consulting position but the day after I received an offer for another company and role which I am more passionate about and interested in. The second job pays less but I feel like there is more opportunity for growth.

Both are great companies and positions but how do I go about rejecting the first job and should I take the second job?

Job 1: Graduate Technical Analyst @ IBM
Job 2: Graduate Risk Consulting - Treasury/Capital @ the big 4

Would be great to get some feedback from you guys :)

Regards,
David

dude DO NOT take the IBM position. IBM is just a big shite hole (source: few friends who started as grads there, left after 1 year). you will not move anywhere you want, you will find it hard to get promotions, you're just a number.

if it's a PWC/deloitte gig, take it and network around to places/projects you want.

    • Thats good to hear haha

Is it easy to reject if you have already signed an offer?

      • +2

yes, be polite but assertive and explain the situation

      • +4

yes, it happens every single year, grads apply for 30 jobs and get offered 2/3 jobs. just say you took up another offer and apologise for the inconvenience, they'll think very little of it.

        • thank you for your help! :)

  • You say you've signed a contract - what have you agreed to?

    • +1

irrelevant - if they walk away before starting work, there is no claimable loss to the other party (employer)

      • I only signed up to the contract because it was offered to me early march way before any other companies had come along with grad offers.

I signed it on the last day before the letter of offer expired hence why this issue has arisen

        • it's not an issue, it's a letter and a stamp

they will just sign someone else up next in line if you dont want the job.
No loss to them, big gain to some grad trying to find a job. Win win.

Statutory probationary period is six months. Either party can walk away just by being polite, firm, and fair.

Just be honest & upfront with them, I'm sure they've got contingencies in place anyway…

+1 Don't take the IBM offer. Have tons of friends working/worked there. Mrs used to work there. Its a hell hole!

I did a short stint at IBM 20 years ago. The experience convinced me to never work in an IT house.

  • Wonder what the IBM HR director thinks when reading comments from this thread?

  • Does anybody know if you should take a IT graduate job in:

    Big4 vs Telstra??

Big4 if you can stand some hard work 😀
