    Netgear R8000

    • any idea who sells it for around that price?

      • you will have to wait for a special…

    • Nope. He needs a ADSL 2+ modem/router not just a router.

Asus wireless AC modem+router all-on-one (if you don't want to put custom firmware on it, such as DSL-AC68U). Otherwise an Asus standalone router (which can support Merlin etc, such as RT-AC68U). If your budget permits, there are AC87U models etc..

    • If standard router ( no ADSL) is ok definitly ASUS with RMerlin FW.
      Great combo.

    D-Link = Don't link.

I'd recommend a standalone bridged modem (eg. either use your d-link, might be OK, or grab a TP-Link TD8817), and a dedicated router which can run Gargoyle. Gargoyle is freaking awesome. Bandwidth control options work really well. The TP-Link Archer C7 is my pick. This is easily the best you can get for under $200.

Saying that, it's probably too complicated for you. You might have to pay someone to set it up for you. If that doesn't tickle your fancy, get an all-in-one like the TP-Link TD-W8960N and just put up with people hogging the internet. They're like $50 and work reasonably well.

      TP-Link Archer C7

I would recommend this as well - except I don't think it has a ADSL2+ modem, correct me if I'm wrong.

The TP-Link Archer D7 is what I'd recommend. It's fast as a greased pig and it's "reasonably" priced for what it is (a high performance WiFi router).

      • His recommendation was for a TP-Link TD8817 bridged to a TP-Link Archer C7 (hence no need for modem in the C7).

I think your suggestion is better. I don't see the advantage of the two separate devices when the Broadcom ADSL chip in the D9 is probably better than the TrendChip in the TD8817. If it was the other way around, it would make more sense to have the two devices.

  • My DD-WRT D'Link DIR-868L is closing in on 200 days uptime. A good router, but you will need to bridge your dsl-2750b like I have since its router only, and it's the same thing if you get R8000. IMO R8000's second 5GHz access point is worthless waste of money. Check http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ for reviews and other info.

Also, you might need to get someone to check your ADSL line sync speed and other stats to check if that is your problem instead. Replacing your router in that case probably won't do much.

  • My TPG net has been doing the same i think they are doing upgrades now.

    • same but not every 1-2 hours though

      • I wonder what is going on? I wonder if we all live around the same area lol some times i do speed test and get like 6mbps the usual is about 17

  • Sounds like you want a modem/router all in one combo, not just a wireless router… keep that in mind or you won't be able to connect your ADSL service.

I picked up a TP-Link Archer D7 in a sale on here just recently and am pleased so far. Replaced my old Billion 7800NXL.

  • I'd recommend the Netgear R7000. Although an older model, runs stable
+ option to install custom firmware

  • I was recommended D-Link DSL-2890AL with dual band wireless AC1750 gigabit Cloud ADSL2+modem router, but I can't use it because it don't have VOIP. Happy to sell it cheap if you can use it?
