Dick Smith Back and Better than Ever?

Hello, Konnichiwa, Bonjour, Hallo, 你好

I just got an email saying Dick Smith is back and better than ever, and of course I read it, they are now selling pretty cheap stuff and of course Kogan products (duh) and it looks pretty nice

So let me know what's your opinion on this?

Brings nothing new to the table. The Dick Smith we know (and loved) is dead, the revived DSE website is just Kogan with a different CSS and there's no product differentiation at all. Everything you buy from there is grey import stock.

The DSE suppliers will also likely not support Kogan at all because he undercuts pretty much everyone else.

The grey import side of things is gonna throw a spanner in the works with anyone thinking they're buying an Aussie product.

I can see many deals over the next 6 months getting negged to oblivion with people thinking they're local stock.

It's looking like kogan may have bought DS's online data base (for email's ect) and running online store as DS. Also selling their own products.
My opinion is it's a bad move for kogan. DS has killed it's brand (pissed of to many people over a long period of time) now kogan bedding with DS(?) will drag kogan down.
That said there may be some good deals to be had there but SOMETIMES kogan come's with it's own issues.

    • I don't think DS pissed off that many, on OZbargain sure, a few but outside of here they still had a good name. Remember the golden rule; it's mostly only those that had a bad experience that talk about it, publicly. Those that had a good one often don't go around broadcasting it..

      Drag Kogan down? Honestly?

Kogan has a far worse name than DS.

If you are talking brand for brand, (meaning own branded products) I'd say they are about even, both are cheaply made & often tried to flog off at high mark ups (eg their own TV's).

It seems they don't take PayPal.

    • There is a PayPal logo on the front page, did you try to buy something?

      • Thanks but I didn't see it earlier.

Honestly with the old DSE, their once a month further 15% off their normal prices had some bargains, you just had to find them (laptops especially when they were further discounted).
Their online store would have been fine if their mediocre retail stores were non-existant.

Looks like New DSE is just kogan with a different name.

  • My instinct says it is caveat emptor all the way with Kogan. For example, they are offering the WD 1Tb Portable for $79 inc free shipping. And the 500Gb version for $80 plus shipping.

    DSE without Eneloops! No!!!

  • Buying things from KOGAN/DS without local warranty. May not be local AU model. As they sell lots of grey import items drop shipped from Asia with long deliver times. Combined the hassle of returning to online store for warranty.

Was looking at a mobile phone from Kogan. Ended up buying elsewhere as it was not the local AU model and didn't support all the latest network bands.

Online only. No store for browsing and pickup. Kogan just won't be the same. The convenience of having a DS store nearby was that you could reserve products online and get it quicker by going to the store to pickup and avoiding postage costs.

The first downfall for DS was way back when they stopped selling all those great electronics components etc and just turned into another big box retail store selling the same old stuff. Must of cost alot to get there in house products branded, tamped and specially made with there logo and names put on them. And when they bailed out of selling CD then blu-ray back in 2013 which was another downfall. As was overpriced products and fluctuating prices.

I am really annoyed Dick Smith still exists, and that it does now exist in such a crappy way.

    こんにちは from Japan ^_^

    The one thing that has p!$$3d me off;

I specifically unsubscribed (when DS emailed me about removing myself from the database) before the handover to Kogan, lo and behold I am now receiving the emails from Kogan..

  • Kogan parallel selling under the Dick Smith brand for greater market penetration. Unfortunately for Ruslan many customers like myself and other ozbargainers are wary of such tricky dicks.

I do wonder what happened to all the old Apple stock as many old iPad airs (2nd gen) and some macbooks didn't sell. Did Kogan buy them? Grays online? I heard they didn't discount them past 20% of the 2-3 year old RRPs.

  • is KOGAN still banned?? from a old tread from 2013 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/100070
if so. can DS deal continue to be posted?, as they are now owned by them??(a work around of Kogan ban?) as the good are likely to distributed from same network.

    • Only store rep posts

      • thanks, for the quick reply. searched Kogan & their has been heaps of deals posted for them. can't believe i don't remember any of them :(

Since they changed I started receiving one advertising each 1-2 day in my e-mail box and it was about everything but like $2 shop old stock.
I decided that that was spamming (too many mails) so now their advertising goes straight in the spam folder and automatically deleted.
