Nice deal on the Callebaut Chocolate Callets, one could moonlight as a chocolatier if they had the skills.

  • Good price for the Basmati rice.

    • -8

Bad price for the Costco membership

        can you fix it?

        • Bob can

What about Scoop, Muck and Dizzy?

      • +1

Yea. Good if you already have one. I think savings pay it off.
But I have seen Woolies and coles have most of the day to day groceries items on sale every now and then. So you buy in bulk from them and can save as well.

      • +4

Buy your membership, and then cancel it within 12 months.

        Net cost: $0.

        • +2

Didn't know this, may try the membership now…

        • +4

          @hashtagbargain:

But a word of warning - some comments here and there have suggested that Costco may not allow you to re-obtain membership after cancellation for a period of 3 months.

To avoid this I would recommend that you sign up now, pay the $60 online, then on the 11th month of your membership cancel yours and obtain a new $60 membership in the name of your partner/relative/sibling/etc.

Rinse and repeat every 11 months = free Costco membership.

          TML.

(PS: Cards must be picked up from your nearest warehouse, where they will take a photograph of you for printing on your card. Remember to take photo ID with you when collecting your card).

        • @KaptnKaos: thanks for the info, kaptn!

        • @hashtagbargain:

          Anytime :)

        • +1

          @KaptnKaos:
How's it possible to sign up under your partner/relative/sibling when you need photo ID anyway. Unless they take you with them which seems the only option but then they risk a future ban on their membership.
They also check your credit card details and if it ain't matching your costco card (with photo ID) there's no way they'll allow you to purchase any item/s. Save the hassle and either pay the membership or get family and friends to purchase legitimately. Depending on your lifestyle expenses, renewing my membership is a no brainer.

        • +1

          @odc:

For example, you could sign up as a member with a supplementary card for your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend if necessary.

Once you reach the 11th month of your membership, cancel your card (which will also cancel supplementary cards too).

At a later time, arrange for your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend to obtain a new membership, and get them to assign you as a supplementary cardholder.

          Repeat every 11 months.

          Edit:

Unless they take you with them which seems the only option but then they risk a future ban on their membership.

Why would you be banned? There's nothing to suggest that taking a former member with you will result in you getting banned as an active member. Besides, some people may have a legitimate reason to suspend and obtain their memberships.

        • Ah I gets. Supplementary cards can only be otained just as long you have the same address as the main card holder. Findings options can be limited. But if it works for you… but I wouldn't encourage it.

        • @odc: do you know how many? is it limited to one per member?

        • @kima:

If you purchase one membership, you get one extra supplementary card. However, this supplementary card will only be issued once the supplementary cardholder presents themselves at the membership counter with appropriate photo identification of their own.

If you require cards for more than two individuals, you (or the third person) will need to purchase another membership.

    • Yeah but if you live in a city, you can probably get a small bag which is cheaper on a $/kg from your local asian/indian/middle eastern shop. ~$20/10kg IIRC (I think we pay $12.50 for a 5kg bag)

      • Yes, and the 50% off Coles deals from time to time make it about 6 or 7 quid for a 5 kilo bag.

        • They are not that great though.

        • The ones that Coles sells in white cloth bags (trying not to defame brand) is 3rd grade Basmati rice. They are no where close to what costco is selling. There is another variety from India gate called classic. Those are aged rice. If you cook it as they are meant to be (not in electric rice cooker), you will be amazed with aroma, size and quality of rice.

In regards to Indian grocery stores, yes they stock same brand and many other brands. Lately due to drop in AUD, prices has gone up by up to 30%

        • @katwal:

          Maharajah's Choice.

        • @katwal: we get Batoukasmarina - even in the rice cooker, it's fluffy & creamy.

    • +1

I think certain Indian stores have these at a similar price, if you don't have a Costco membership!

  • you can Buy coffins at costco

    • +9

Yeah, I've heard people are dying to get their hands on them!

      • +3

So long as Costco doesn't make a killing on them, I don't care.

        • +3

The process you have to undertake to get one can be quite consuming.

    • +4

Does it come with the costco lifetime warranty?

      • They sure do!

        Good luck claiming it…

    • +2

I think it will be a GRAVE mistake to buy coffins.

      • Apparently Costco offers a lifetime warranty with their discount coffins. I wonder how they'd deal with that…

    • I don't think you can at the Aus stores.

  • I had Costco membership. I got a job overseas so I cancelled the membership and got $60 back. They told me I can't reapply for membership for 6 months.

    • +1

Wow, so there must be enough people doing the free membership thing for them to extend the barring period to 6 months!

  • +3

I'm still not sure what the attraction of Costco is.
I can understand some of the people at work who aren't really interested in bargains. They expect to get a good deal at Costco, and I suppose they do get reasonable prices without having to think about it.
But why the love from OzB? Other sources regularly have better prices, and often for more manageable quantities and more easily purchased from a local store instead of requiring a special trip.

    • For one, you absolutely won't get cheaper petrol anywhere else.

Costco is flogging ULP at 100.7c/L tonight.

Coles Express, Caltex WW and Mobil have risen to 127.9c/L.

But if you find groceries at equivalent prices elsewhere, please feel free to shop from them. A lot of things are indeed cheaper at Costco so some people would understandably see the value in being Costco customers.

Unfortunately I'm not here to convince or discourage anybody to join or leave Costco, that's something that each individual would have to judge based on their own circumstances.

    • +3

Lifetime warranty on electronics purchased if you maintain the same membership. Effectively the same as paying for extended warranties. Yes I know and understand about statutory rights but I really don't want to argue with the manufacturer about say a 3 year old TV that has just died if they claim that it only comes with 12 months warranty in the first place.

      • +1

That is a big plus I would say. I buy extended one for big tvs. Not worth the hassle later with the manufacturer.

    • I'm in agreement with you.

I've had a membership for years, have let it lapse, hardly ever use it, just don't… go in there, looking for something worth buying, and really hardly ever find anything, certainly not $60 worth.

You can invent savings by saying "I bought X item in massive bulk and saved heaps"… but a) Usually it's not something you'd actually use that much of, until you go and buy it in bulk, then force yourself to use because you have so much. and b) The savings never really seem to pan out as being much at all.

I mean, really, look at these coupons… BOXES of chocolate bars? Really? Who needs that? 48 chocolate bars! And again, not that cheap at still being 83c a bar… they're $1 at woolworths at the moment, and I can buy ONE of them instead for 48!

20kg of rice. How many people have the room to store 20kg of rice?

So, no. I've let my membership lapse… I tried, I really did, but it's not worth it.

  • +1

Savings on fuel is worth more than the membership.

    • +1

Indeed, if you've got a Costco fuel outlet nearby…

      • I actually find that Shell fuel lasts at least an extra 50k with a full tank in my car. Shell has some special fuel efficiency formula that helps with the extra milage. Costco on the other hand tends to feel like it evaporates too easy in comparison.

I still buy cistco fuel when it is way cheaper than Shell. Like atm 20c+. Then it pretty much balances out…

        Have others found the same?

  • It is not necessary to print or show the linked coupons in store.
All discounts are automatically applied at point of sale.

I went there and the discounts were not automatically applied, I asked them and showed them on my phone they said i needed to print out the coupons.

    • +1

      Did you go today?

If so, their systems seem to be operating correctly.

The offers all start May 6 (tomorrow, being Friday).

If you visit tomorrow, I guarantee the offers will be applied at point of sale. Further, the member of staff who checks your Costco card upon entry has a heap of the linked coupons printed out to distribute to customers, but still these printed vouchers you receive at the warehouse do not have to be shown at the register or upon exit.

      • no not today, it was the last lot of vouchers.

        • +1

          That's odd! :S

Usually they have these vouchers to hand out at the entrance of the warehouse once the offers begin, and the shelf tickets are updated to reflect the voucher offers. And the point of sale doesn't have any functionality to enter vouchers either, so it's strange that they'd demand a printed voucher… have you tried asking any other member of staff, or at the membership counter?

        • @KaptnKaos: I didn't really want to bother, I wanted to get out of there it was only $3 and I had enough of the crowd pushing me around because it was busy. I was still happy with the price anyway but next time i will print them off before i go just incase. Got myself a hotdog and drink for $2 and I was happy.

        • +1

          @kima:

          The drink is refillable too!

    • +1

That's weird, usually the discounts are applied automatically.

  • Hnngggggg Diabeetus

  • Now that ALDI has arrived in Adelaide, I don't think I'll renew my costco membership. Yes great savings on Fuel, but the store is on the other side of town.
There grocery prices are OK but mostly you can do better playing the discount field (Oz Bargain style)and with ALDI.

  • My only costco is a pretty far drive for me. Does anyone know if they are selling heaters yet and whether or not they are a good deal? I like the idea of the lifetime warranty but don't want to drive all the way out there if they don't have any heaters for sale.

  • I thought wtf are Indie gala selling this for….

  • Do Costco still sell beef jerky and how much is it?

    • They have a number of lines available, but one I remember is the Jack Link's original beef jerky. They've got a 200g-odd pack for about $12.
