BP Modbury SA Not Honouring Gift Card For Split Sale of Petrol

Not happy.

I just bought petrol at BP Modbury (SA) specifically because I had a $25 gift card. To emphasise: I only went here because of the card.
I put $50 of petrol in the tank and went to pay. I was told I could not. Why? Because in direct contravention of the cards terms and conditions I could not use it for part payment. Unless I had cash for the remainder (I couldn't use a card for the remaining $25). I don't carry cash, and the cards t&c's clearly state:

The Card has a stored value which may be used to purchase (or part pay) any goods or services at participating BP outlets which has an EFTPOS terminal.

The cashier said I could have put $25 in and then stopped before putting another $25 in. That is she told me afterwards. When I asked how I would know about this or where it was written she said it was policy. I asked again where this policy was written, and got a blank look.

I wasted my time and money as I could have purchased petrol cheaper elsewhere. What is more, I now still have a $25 gift card as no matter how much I pointed out that this practice is not pre-noted (and in fact is against the card's own t&c's), I had no choice than to pay for overpriced petrol in full with my credit card.

I shall continue to share my disappointment at this unethical practice until it is resolved.

That's outrageous, I've redeemed BP gift card with credit card points and used for part payment without any issues in Sydney

    • That's exactly what I was doing.

  • Just an ignorant franchisee I imagine.

    • The checkout operator said they used to be able to do it til they became an 'On The Run' who run a lot of the BP's here

      • Ignorant "On The Run" then. They cannot override BP's T&Cs.

@seanbaussie Also not true, have done part payment with Credit Card and Gift card before at OTR BP.

Write to BP head office, and see what is their response before getting to embroiled in this, as GP above says its probably operator error.

Never Know they may even send you an extra card as an apology

      Wrote to them tonight

here, sign this petition on change.org.

    but seriously.

cashier could have broken it down into 2 payments.

I would have told her she can either accept the card or remove the fuel from my vehicle.

I did ask what would happen if I only paid $25 as I didn't have cash with me.
She was incredibly polite with me (more polite than I was to be honest), but said she'd have to report it as a drive-off.

      • +1

Technically it is not a drive off - you offered to pay via legal tender.
I used to work for a chain of service stations.

I have used the exact same card in BP outlets and used it as a part payment for the total bill of $75. The cashier would first use $25 as a gift card (Eftpos in my case) purchase through the machine, then added another $50 charge on my credit card. Write to BP, and make sure you put cashier's details there so she could be educated for future customers.

Operator probably didn't know how to process the transaction. I've had that with Coles where checkout (dropkick) chick didn't know how to do it and just flatly told me no it can't be done. I've done it plenty of times with self checkout, it's a little tricky though and does require an IQ that exceeds your shoe size :)

    • No, that is not the case here.

      OP has stated

      • Oh OK. Perhaps just put $25 as suggested then and go elsewhere to use up the credit voucher then. Personally I'd use the voucher and move on, my time is worth more to me then that

An update for those of you wondering about my epic 'man vs big company' battle with BP/On The Run (franchise).
OTR's Head Office assures me that it's impossible to use a BP gift card for part payment with an EFTPOS card for the remainder. They assured me this is the case at all BP's nationally.
BP's Customer Service team assures me it's quite normal and entirely possible to pay with both a BP Gift Card and the remainder with EFTPOS.

I've written back to BP to seek clarification given what On The Run says.

I, of course, still have a $25 BP Gift Card I don't know what I can do with.

Buy exactly $25 of petrol with it? Or $25.02, seeing we are on OzB.

This is in the very fine print:

When paying for a purchase, only one card can be used per transaction.
(I did read that though didn't read it to mean what they said in an email):
This means that the remainder of the balance needs to be paid for using cash.

If your purchase(s) are greater than the balance remaining on the card, you will be liable for the payment in cash of any excess purchase amount.

    • The "one Card" condition is still vague, because they can mean one BP card since it's capitalised.

However the line: If your purchase(s) are greater than the balance remaining on the card, you will be liable for the payment in cash of any excess purchase amount, seems to nail it.

Too bad. I do however recall paying an excess at a BP station, not at OTR, with PayWave. Sounds like OTR doesn't like that sort of thing. What a bummer. I mean, how many people can manage to spend exactly $25 on petrol or other goods at a servo?
